Absolutely right. This is why I say that MS is kinder to sysadmins than users. On the network I ran at UK, the OS was slipstream updated each time an SP was released--and the automation file set up to set installation preferences and the sitewide registration key. This was placed as a flatfile on the application server for network installs.

I understand the concept of "slipstreaming," but I'm not sure that will work with the "Recovery Disk" version of XP as provided by IBM. It's all customized for the IBM ThinkPads.

Ghost.
Get everything installed and build a ghost image, it will span multiple files.
Before you do the Ghost image clean up the garbage.
Remove the service pack/update files in the windows directory.
Clean all the temp files and temporary interenet files.
Uninstall anything not needed.
Empty the trash.
Defrag, defrag, defrag until it only takes a moment to defrag.
(Thats the trick with defrag BTW)
Set the page file to 100mb.
Restart and run Ghost.

The HP website has a fix for the problem if your using one of their AMD systems!

73,

This was caused by HP loading both the Intel and AMD drivers in their images instead of creating a separate image for each CPU type. Everything worked OK until SP3 came out and then the problem showed itself with HP’s using AMD processors. It affected all of the HP notebooks using AMD processors at the time and many of their desktop systems,

If you run into this you can uninstall the SP3 service pack in safe mode and the Google for a tool to remove the unneeded additional driver and then run the upgrade again.
