Default Very Sloooooow CW practice

Hello All,

I am looking for anyone who would like to practice CW, very slow. I am about 6 to 8 words per minute but I believe actual qso practice would help greatly. I have tried a local CW practice here in Portland, Oregon but have trouble copying there signal due to band and distance, 10 meters. Any help is appreciated and maybe there is someone out there in my shoes, we could possibly set up a daily or every other day qso.

Question slow CW QSOs

JR,
I'd suggest 40 meters about 7.110-7.125 MHz........ "On the air" QSOs will quickly build the "budding" CW Operator's confidence as well as speed.

Hello Bill,

Have not talked with you in awhile. Are you still the 10 meter beacon coordinator? Hope all is well. I will give it a try, I assume I should just call CQ at a comfortable speed? Thanks and 73.

Hi JR

I am recently relicensed 2.5 weeks ago after being inactive for almost 40 yrs! SLooowww is just right for me :-)

My QTH is in the Central Valley of CA... Patterson, CA.

I can work 40 Meters North up into WA and OR as well as South into AZ and NM. I've QSOed last week into Bend and Eugene so Portland is probably in the (lumpy) lobe of my long-wire antenna and my old Drake TR4 that's putting ~130 Watts out to the long-wire on 40 M (Thru a tuner of course).

I'll be back home Saturday if you want to give it a try Saturday afternoon???

I can also load the long-wire into 10 M, but I have no idea if I can get-out at all on 10 M... especially up to Portland on 10! I have only heard a few local CA beacons on 10 M and not much else (But I don't listen 'way-up-there' very much :-).

If you want to give it a try this Saturday, either post here or send me a private message. I would like a practice session very much.

Gud luck with your CW skills... No worries... You WILL get faster / better as you practice and I have found EVERYONE willing to slow down and yak with me and my slow fist. Good community, this!

I wish I could help you out. My station is still in my closet waiting for me to clean out a place in the garage and put up my tower. I would recommend 40mtrs and yes, just call cq at a speed that you are comfortable working. Another route is to scan the bands and find a conversation in progress that is a tad faster than you can comfortably copy. Spend maybe a half hour a day doing that and your speed will come up. Remember that it's not the speed of the fist but the quality of the fist that counts. In the Navy, when we were still working CW, speed was the last of the three things we worked on. Behind accuracy and reliability.

Good luck and enjoy the mode. Done well, it's music.

As suggested, tune up on 40 meters day or night around 7.110 to 7.125 and call CQ at a comfortable speed. The best way to increase your CW speed is to QSO with stations. If they send to fast, don't forget to ask them to QRS (slow down). A good operator should return your call at the same speed you call. If they call too fast, don't forget "QRS."

Good luck!

Thank you for all the replys. I will give it a try asap. I am pretty nervous that I will completely mess up on the air but that comes with learning. Thank you all again and I will PM / email those that offered help.

Default slow to recognize the call

Hi JR,
At the time I thought the call looked familiar..... just didn't tie it together with the 28.292.8 beacon in Damascus Oregon .

Yep, I'm still the IARU Region 2 HF Beacon Coordinator.

Hopefully I'll be able to catch you for a CW chat.

Hi JR,

I am in the same situation as you are, I have practiced and got my speed up to about 6 or 7 WPM but I have only had one CW contact.

I would love to set up a semi-regular CW sked if you would like to.

You can post here or send me a private message if you want to set something up.

73s,
Keane W5KAB
