    Solomon Islands Calling!

I recently had the pleasure of talking to Sam, H44A on Guadalcanal during a recent 10 meter opening to the Pacific. During my QSO with Sam, I learned that he was working hard to introduce ham radio to the native people of the Solomon Islands. This task is a considerable undertaking since the islands lack a dependable communications infrastructure of any type.

Sam has decided to change all that. He has moved to the islands to start a ham radio school that will assist the local people in establishing basic wireless communications throughout the island chain.

Let me quote from the Amateur Radio School of the Solomon Islands web site:

“H44A is the official call sign of the Amateur Radio School of the Solomon Islands and is currently operated by Sam who is one of a very few licensed amateur radio operators on the Solomon Islands, none of whom were born here.

Sam, H44A, traveled from Australia to the Solomons to provide full time help in getting the Radio School project up and running, and plans to remain for as long as his personal funds will allow - then back to Australia. Sam brought with him an intense desire to help the people of the Solomon Islands reach their objective to educate and equip their citizens with ham radio. Sam can only do this for as long as his finances allow. This is a prime reason why he set a No QSL Policy - his finances simply must remain fully focused on the task at hand - getting the islanders on the air, and to form a National Amateur Radio Society.

As with many goals, there are obstacles and this effort faces many - extreme poverty, no equipment, no supplies, no tools just to name a few. But what it lacks with these resources is offset by the desire of the people to learn and succeed.

Imagine no paper, no pens, NO SOLDER for example, and one's perspective begins to form. No telephones, no computers and you can understand where the people are at and the reason why the country's leaders have finally recognized the need for communications, education, and how amateur radio will help.

This is Sam's personal goal - all of his energies are devoted to helping the people of the Solomon Islands obtain their amateur radio licenses, acquire useable radio equipment, and establish reliable communications amongst the villagers throughout the 350 or so Solomon Islands.”

Fellow operators, how many of us have some old equipment that is just sitting there unused? Maybe you have some old 23 channel CB radio stuffed in the closet? How about a previously enjoyed SWR meter?

Or maybe some unused school supplies?

Well, here’s your opportunity to give something back to the hobby that will truly be appreciated by those on the receiving end.

150 others have registered to do this FREE course run by volunteers. Why? Because they don't have the fees to go to regular private or government schools.

Currently there is no Radio Amateur at the Solomon Islands Amateur Radio Training School. They immediately need a volunteer radio ham to come and supervise the “on air” 10 amateur radio contacts part of the Amateur Radio licence course. Imagine you have passed everything but because there is no ham you can’t complete this last requirement. If you can  get an air ticket then accommodation is free.
