CQ Magazine published results of its reader poll on retention of telegraphy testing for General. 57% said it should be kept. 76% said it should be kept for Extra. If you remember, comments on RM 05-235 were 55% against removing telegraphy testing completely. In the CQ poll, you returned a reader service card which prevented your wife and uncle Skeezix from voting (as happened on the FCC site).
The poll also said that Amateurs favor giving Techs limited HF privleges albeit by a slight margain. I agree.

How slight a margin should we give them, Charlie?

The "S" word... It's not the socialism, it's the stupidity behind it.

Full 10 Meter priviledges.

Granting full Novice privileges to the existing Technician license has my vote. #No need for a code test. #If the Tech is interested, he'll learn enough of it to fire up on HF. #Or use a keyboard and reader... #By whatever means, it'll teach the lesson that CW is not an anachronism, but a real communication tool.

Yes, CW is a lot like algebra or trigonometry... It's difficult to imagine what it could possibly be good for while you are learning it, and then comes that magic moment when you actually put it to its intended use and you have that ' A-Ha ! ' moment that is impossible to put into words.

I got my "A-ha" Moment years ago and have been lovin' it ever since!
Bring back the Novice license. #That was the best ticket in to ham radio. #Simpler written, all you had to do was learn 5WPM...
But, some still say "the code's too haaaaard." #I can hear the whining now! #

I don't think that those who whine about CW see it as an anachronism. It seems like they see it as more of a punishment.

Aside from attempting to cast we coders as snide, selfish elistists, I can only say, I wanted my ticket license) so badly at 12-13, I studied code and rearranged my brain until I code copy cw. At age 19, I passed second class ship board radio officier license.
I never made the HUGE bucks a radio officier would have made me in life, but still glad I got the license.
Listening to guy rag or contest or DX at 25 wpm has to convince any reasonable person cw is a LANGUAGE and SKILL.
If code is dropped, those cw frequencies will someday be silent. And some how outside of just plain nostalgia, feel we have lost something important.
