What magazine comes with that membership? Also, have heard of a magazine called S9?, I believe. Is it for ham or CB? And is there a magazine also for CB also?

Recommendations on antenna books that are not too technical, I can do some math but mainly looking for thing to build.....just to see what I can do with them!

    Question

QST is the magazine published by the ARRL. #
    http://www.arrl.org/qst/
It is included with a yearly membership, BUT you can also pick up a copy at news stands.
Locally, it is available at both Borders' and Barnes & Noble.

CQ, another popular amatuer radio magazine, is also available at news stands
    http://www.cq-amateur-radio.com/

-- as well as a number of US and UK Shortwave Listening (SWL) magazines such as: Popular Communications, Shortwave Monitoring, etc.

I have not seen CB specific magazines, such as CB Magazine or S9 since the early 1980s.
Most manufacturers for Citizens Band Service (CB) equipment -- since its beginning in 1959 -- will tell you that this market peaked in the 1970s. #By the 1980s, changing politics, new services: Cellular Telephone and Family Radio Service (FRS) significantly reduced the market share of CB. #It's usage today can largely be found at truck stops, etc.

You will find sections (or columns) of Popular Communications magazine devoted to Family Radio Service (FRS); Amatuer Radio, Citizens Band (CB) Radio; General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and SWL.

I am starting to get a whiff of olde d' troll here.

"S9" magazine has not been around for about 25 years. It went away when the fad wore off.

"QST" is the newsletter for the ARRL. You receive it with your membership.

The ARRL Handbook is a simple book, easy to read. There are better books if you want to know why things work, what puts the smoke in electronics and the magic in antennas.

Electronic Communications by Robert Shrader is perhaps one of the finest for the smoke.

L B Cebik's antenna books for the magic.

My opinion of QST is based on the latest issues and looking back at the QST's from 1976 and 1977. I am very fortunate to have found the old ones because the new ones suck. 80 pages of ads in the June 2005 issue.

Listen, there is no 'troll' here. #I had put a search engine, #yahoo, I think, on magazines for ham radio, cb radio, antennas and the such. #S9 came up but could not find 'subscription rates and such for it'. #I didn't know that it had been out of publication for 'years'. #I am just trying to get a good handle on what I am trying to do.

I am going to get my Technician license, by the way I am a disabled veteran and I don't have anything to do and am going crazy with not doing something. #I am looking to the CB for use in my pickup truck and am looking forward to next year's crop of weather watchers school in #my area. #I figure that I can get all of my info thru these magazines and such.

I am sorry that this comes, came across as a 'troll'. #This is the first time in my posting anywhere that anyone called me a troll. #I have joined the ARRL so will be getting the QST; fouond that out after I had already posted this new topic.

If I am not wanted I will back out of the group and apologize for wasting your time on me.

I used 'ode' (Latin/French) for " 'ode' of trolls" as in 'ode'='Song' resulting in "Song of Trolls". I can also understand 'eau' as in 'odor of a troll'.

First one would have a troll singing along and then someone would come along and 'smell' the troll.

Cliff, your question seemed honest enough to me. You got the answer before I had a chance to answer, so . . .

Good luck getting your ticket. Not all of us OFs (old pharts - a relative term. I'm "only" 43, but have been hamming going on 31 years) are down on newcomers. Yes, I have my personal limit to how much stupidity I can tolerate, but a newcomer with legit questions is always welcome in my book. We were ALL newcomers once upon a time and all of us had questions that I'm sure others considered "dumb." I remember my first visit to the local radio club about a month after getting my Novice license. What I didn't know was that this club had no Novices, but rather was a repeater-based group. I had no clue that such a thing as a "repeater" existed, and it would be many more months before I figured out - sort of - how they even worked. (It's a good story, I'll post it again one day!)

Please keep asking questions and enjoy! And remember, this is the internet, not ham radio, so please don't judge ham radio and hams in general on what you see here.
