 Hello, my name is Joel Shelton (N8XJ/A65BX). I am a college professor by day (and active ham otherwise). For a research project, I am conducting a survey of hams who are "relatively new" to amateur radio—those who were first licensed on January 1, 2000 or after. I am focusing on these hams because I am interested in what attracts people to take up a century-old hobby for the first time in the 21^st century.

If you fit this category, please take a few minutes to complete my survey.

I will use the survey results to write articles about the current state of amateur radio and what continues to attract newcomers. One article will be for an academic journal, but others will be submitted to QRZ.COM, a ham magazine, etc. I will be able to share my findings with you in this manner.

Great idea, Joel!! Hope you'll find other outlets for it as well so ham radio can be seen by the general public as something more positive than an obsolete technology and a blight on the landscape.
BTW, I'd like to participate, but I've been licensed since 1966. I was pretty much QRT (had no gear of my own so only op'd from club and friends' stations) until ~Y2K. Good luck with it; I'll be looking forward to reading it! Very 73...Joe

Interesting survey concept Joel ! - I too would like to participate like Joe, but was originally licensed in the late 60's as a Novice but drifted away due to life events, etc.. Re-discovered the hobby in 2011 and got back into it. I think there may be a significant number of us who have returned to the hobby of our youth. Would be interesting to include the re-licensed group in this study but it could also be a topic all by itself as a tangent. Good Luck - hope you get a lot of participation and look forward to reading your articles !

Similar story here. Novice 1971-72, drifted away, forgot about it, then came back in 2001.

Interesting survey. I just got licensed last year and was going to participate in your survey OP. But it was a bit too intrusive - felt too much like data mining.

I'm just paranoid like that.

Just an FYI, your referenced question numbers on your followup questions are all off by 2 or 3 questions (e.g. it refers you to question #6 when clearly it is meant to reference question #8, etc., and this pattern repeats throughout the survey).

Otherwise I wish you the very best in your survey and eventual analysis and I have made my very modest contribution to the effort a few minutes ago.

Any VE can answer that-- in the US they are coming in as dispatcher type auxiliaries... ARES, preppers, and so on. Or retirees. VHF.

Many new hams see ham radio as the rf equivalent of the police auciliary or the volunteer FD. Nothing wrong with that, but the shift is quite one sided.

Isnt this obvious? It's not as if the HF bands are exploding with activity from new DXers and experimenters/makers.Yet the number of licensees is at a record high....

Be great if they did.
