Nicknamed 'Inky' Early In Life, This Photographer (W1MPO) Was Well-Rounded:

93-year-old Joe "Inky" Rusczek, of Wallingford, holds a 35mm film camera he used while a photojournalist for the Record Journal. Ruszek is a WWll army veteran and a ham radio hobbyist. WALLINGFORD - When he was growing up in Wallingford in the 1920s, Adwin Rusczek would hang around with a group of youngsters who called themselves the Dead End Kids. One had a penchant for handing out nicknames, and for no reason Rusczek can recall he was assigned the name "Inky." The name has stuck for more than eight decades. Rusczek's wife of 55 years, Lucy, calls him "Ink." By the onset of the Second World War, Rusczek was a natural for the Army Signal Corps. He joined in 1942 as a radio operator using Morse code. As a tech sergeant, he served in the 51st Signal Battalion of the 5th Army, under General Mark Clark. "Most of the guys didn't know much about electronics or radio," he said. "You have to know how a signal travels. You've got to understand the technical portion." Rusczek's military service took him across North Africa, from Casablanca to Tunis, where his forces hooked up with those of General George Patton. He was with Patton again, in Sicily. One day found himself in a house there, with a meeting of top brass that included Patton.
