To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the departure of the first convoy of ships carrying Australian and New Zealand (ANZAC) soldiers to Gallipoli and the Western Front in World War I (WWI) and the significant role played by Albany, a small town on the south west corner of Western Australia, in Australia’s ANZAC history (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_spirit), a number of commemorative events will be taking place in Albany Western Australia from the 31 October to 2 November 2014.

Albany Western Australia was the last place that many soldiers saw Australian soil.

The ANZAC spirit and legend is well documented in the national Australian history, its memorials and musuems. ANZAC Day is celebrated in Australia on 25 April every year and is the national day of remembrance for all those who have served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Day)

In recognition of this significance the Australian Federal Government Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) has given permission for the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) to use the ANZAC name in special event amateur call signs.

Southern Electronics Group (SEG) in Albany Western Australia has been granted permission to use a special event call sign VI6ANZAC over the weekend of the Albany commemorative events. SEG will be the first club in Western Australia and the second club in Australia to be granted use of an ANZAC Centenary Special Event callsign.

SEG will be restricted using the call sign to one 24 hour period over the weekend, so all members will come together to maximise use of it on Saturday 1 November 2014.

No matter what transpires, this is a great "once in a lifetime" opportunity!

The special event call sign and QSL Card will be highly sought after by VK amateurs and overseas amateurs alike as use of the ANZAC call sign suffix is being highly regulated by WIA, The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and DVA.

VI6ANZAC will be active on all HF bands 160M - 10M, including the WARC bands from 0001hrs (WST - +8 hours UTC) to 2359hrs WST. Digital modes will also be operating throughout the period.

The operators of VI6ANZAC are looking forward to working as many VK and overseas stations as they can and a special QSL card will be available for those who make contact with the Special Event Station.

Please see our QRZ Page for further information and our real time logbook entries. (http://qrz.com/db/vi6anzac)
