Cross Country Wireless drops Sentry project

Cross Country Wireless (Chris Moulding) of Bolton, makers of various radio items, have been working for three years on a new Sentry SDR-based transceivers and receivers. They have now announced, reluctantly, that they have decided not to go into production.

This will obviously be a great disappointment to those following progress in this project. They cite a need for a major expansion of the company to meet expected demand and to provide adequate customer support.

Lotsa blood sweat and tears went into that, a shame. We wish Chris well.

That is disappointing, and best of luck to them. Their web site announcement contains the additional interesting statement about the product cancelation,

"There is also an additional legal aspect to the decision. We have had enquiries from many potential users who may not use the proposed transceiver for amateur radio use and will use it for illegal purposes or detrimental activity."

I am curious what the anticipated diversion into unintended illegal use may have been. Could it not be prevented in product design, ie, firmware / software limits? Won't those perps simply just use somebody else's product? Should hams be watching out for that?

It's the end user's responsibility to operate legally. Certainly this wouldn't be the only product on the market capable of transmitting illegally if misused.

As for not putting a product to market because of expected sales... Huh?

I wonder if they would have any interest in releasing this to the open source community, or even possibly release it in a self supported kit business model?

    Just a thought, 73's

Sounds like the growing of the company might invoke too much additional hassle of Government imposed Health Care cost......etc. Why else would you not want a business to be wildly successful and grow without bounds?

That sounds like a wildly speculative prognosis. Perhaps company confidentiality should be respected.

Sometimes there simply isn't enough working capital to make it a worthwhile business venture.

Hams simply dont account for huge sales margins. History demonstrates, other ham companies pulled the plug for similar reasons.

Perhaps if there was a larger market chunk to serve, such as not only hams, but military and/or commercial users involved too, it would help to diversify the company to get it off the ground.

    Well thanks for trying anyways.

Depressing for sure but I am glad they stopped when realizing they did not have the means to do it right. Last thing we need is another one of those companies from MS.

Maybe they can go the Shark Tank and get a deal with Mr. Wonderful. He'll just want a part of every sale.

If it's digital, it's hackable. Kudos to them if they saw a potential terrorist threat and took it on the chin to stop the proliferation of something that could be warped into something of violence.

Strange statement. If that was true then why start an SDR project, knowing the potential of SDR upfront. SDR is by definition: open

Should ski mask manufactures halt production because of bank robbers?

My take: the FLOOD of cheap SDR dongles and the wave of SDR products on the way made the business model unfavorable/unprofitable.

What if Flex Radio took this position?? Please...

They may have encountered the Bureau of Industrial Security
and Export Administration Regulations. If you read BIS's fine
print the Business is on the hook to insure that the customer
is not a bad actor nor will their customer resell to bad actors.
Now how in the heck is a Mom and Pop business suppose to
vette a customer in Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania etc? Think I
am pulling your chain, read the following:
    http://www.bis.doc.gov/

Look at some of their recent enforcement actions also. Intel
was busted in the kazoo for selling encryption technology.
    http://www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/ab...0-penalty-for-unauthorized-encryption-exports
On the page below you will see where unprocessed red
cedar is on the banned list of Bureau of Industrial Security.
    http://www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/regulations/federal-register-notices#79fr59166

A business has to certify each customer is a good doobie and
maintain records to that effect. They have to obtain the EAR
Classification number for each part and verify that the buyer
is not prohibited from purchasing the part. You cannot legally
now ship a 1N34 diode (EAR99) outside the US now without
    qualifying the buyer.

    No good deed goes unpunished.
