    K9HAM 30th anniversary
The Lewis & Clark Radio Club: Godfrey, IL
The History of a valuable resource to the Riverbend area:
    The club observed its 30th anniversary.on Oct. 11, 2014.
To begin with, let me say it's very difficult to write a three + decade description of an organization that’s been involved in so many areas of community service.
The founding of our organization started about 33 years ago with about 15 local "ham" radio operators. We discussed the idea of starting a club for our hobby at informal, morning "koffee klatch" meetings at a local restaurant. The original group included a professor, a college instructor, several machinists, a contractor and many from other walks of life. Our original intent was not to have a club burdened with lengthy business meetings, committee reports, etc. The focus we wanted was to be discussing radio related materials & practices.
One member of this group, Jim Duffey, an instructor at Lewis & Clark Community College, arranged for meeting facilities there. At this time l must add; we owe a debt of gratitude to the college for accommodating us thru the years. In addition to club meeting rooms, they have provided us with examining areas, radio demonstrations, & other club functions. Another founder, Bill Preis volunteered the use of his equipment free of charge, enabling greater distance & more reliable contacts.
The club began to grow, holding hobby-oriented activities, participating in contests, & gathering with other members of the hobby for "swap fests". Soon, at no cost; we had a newsletter published by Larry Roberts another member. With growth; we began involving ourselves in providing communications services for civic & charitable organizations, as well as emergency & disaster communications for the area. These services are made possible via liaison with the various organizations such as The Alton Halloween Parade Committee, Bucket Brigade, Pride Inc. as well as others. In addition we work closely with The National Weather Service during severe weather, floods etc & sponsoring their "weather spotters" training classes thru the efforts of John Nell, a now retired LCCC Dept. head. John helped us immensely by obtaining services from the college for our activities
The services of administering the license exams began in 1984 when the F.C.C. turned over that process to qualified members of the "ham" community. We give these exams at no charge to those interested in joining us in this hobby. (After 25 yrs. as chief examiner for our testing team, I must give my personal wholehearted thanks to John).
Ham Radio has changed immensely over the past 30 years, as has our club. Club members enjoy sharing ideas with others & presentations on topics related to the electronics .field. With the advent of increased digital methods, & progress in other technologies, it seems like an enjoyable pastime & a way to serve your area & others. We are able to provide worldwide or area wide communications when needed.
To not mention or credit the founding members of this club, would be a disservice. They are: to name only a few in no particular order; and with apologies to anyone I omit, Scott Clifton, Jack Leverage, Stan Jacobs, Ron Wright, Tom Watkins, Sam Effinger , Chuck Engdale, Bob Onori, Harold Elmore,
Ed Wilson, Bill Preis, Ed Turnbeaugh, Lloyd Bishop, & Rich Morgan.
Regretfully, some of that group has passed on; to name only a few they are: Bill Preis, Ed Turnbeaugh, Lloyd Bishop Harold Elmore, & Ed Wilson.
After more than 3 decades, the only original members of the "founding" group still on the roster are: Chuck Engdale K9CMO, Jack Leverage KC9KY, Ron Wright N9ADJ, & me, Rich Morgan KF9F.
The club continues today under the leadership of it's current president, Shawn Knight, KD9SK.
Finally: Come join us, we meet at Lewis & Clark College on the first Tuesday of each month (holidays excluded), in the Reid Hall - Faculty Dining Room and Café Area, at 7:30 P.M. or; see us on the web at:
