InnovAntennas to launch a new 'reflector-less' Yagi at the RSGB Hamfest

5el-70mhz-LFA-R-we.png InnovAntennas will launch a new reflector-less Yagi at this year’s Newark hamfest.
The LFA-R is a gain-focused Yagi presented in a light-weight package for VHF and available in two band versions for certain HF bands (through Force 12).

More information on this antenna and its capabilities can be found at the InnovAntennas website and also a full article presentation has been published in the current issue of DUBUS magazine.

MFJ Enterprises has expanded upon InnovAntenna's reflector-less yagi design, offering a yagi that also has no directors. Gain is comparable to a half wave dipole.

Has a very low wind load too.

Equipped with an Armstrong rotator, no extra charge.

Probably a kit that you have to finish.

Sounds like a great antenna, but how can it be called a 'Yagi' if there is no reflector and the driven element is a loop?

Want more gain, put a reflector on it!

Sounds like we're being thrown for a loop...!

InnovAntennas is challenging and changing traditional Yagi perceptions. As their designs are proven, change for the right reasons is good.

Building a Yagi with a ZL Special driven element pair and adding directors is hardly a new idea.

Really... who has done this recently? Which company, in the last 20 or 30 years, has pursued this angle since the age of computer modeling? Please enlighten us.

A Japanese company, TET did it on their 40 meter beam. It worked quite well in fact.

CAL-AV built two element beams using this feed arrangement. I don't know if they ever offered 3element versions or not.

You may now consider yourself enlightened.

Building a yagi (especially a 2 element one) without a reflector is definitely possible. The ARRL antenna book shows the data for spacing for a driven element and director only, and how it affects gain, impedance, etc. I have often wondered why 2 element yagis don't use this design as it would reduce the wind load some.

Probably the same reason those who do nothing more than go to a ham store, buy gear, pay someone to install it to just sit on an 80m net are called radio amateurs.
