    PROBLEM

1x1, Special Event call signs are assigned to various short term events during the course of a calendar year.

QRZ.com has allowed the call sign database entries for some 1x1 calls to be permanently associated with one of the short term events using a call.

The result of this action is an inadvertent mis-direction of QSL requests and donations to the wrong event.

    POSSIBLE SOLUTION
To alleviate this problem, QRZ.com could make ALL 1x1 calls generic in nature by using the following suggested text, in the body of the listing:

In PR Docket 93-305, the Federal Communications Commission reserved a block of 750 call signs, in the one-by-one call sign format, for temporary use by amateur radio stations during events that are of special significance to the amateur service community.

A special event call sign aids amateur operators in calling attention "on-air" to their participation in the event as well as helping to bring public notice to the event. Examples of the use of one-by-one call signs by amateur stations include a wide variety of events such as conventions, festivals, dedications and anniversaries.

A one-by-one call sign consists of a single prefix letter (K, N, or W), the region number (0 to 9), and a single suffix letter (A to Z, except the letter X). There are 750 such call signs. The FCC rules (Section 2.302) do not permit the assignment of one-by-one amateur station call signs containing the suffix letter X.

To determine which event was using this 1x1 call sign, during a particular time period, refer to the on-line, One-by-One Database at: http://www.1x1callsigns.org/

However, the One-by-One Database does not list the URL, if any, of each event listed. This would result in the station wanting a QSL needing to find the current URL or other source of event information.

    QUESTIONS

If the One-by-One Database could be expanded to include event URLs, would the above scheme solve the problem?

    Is their another possible solution?

That sounds good would be nice if they would just list the calls on the page and do the links from each time the calls used

    Hi Dennis,

Is there a way for QRZ.com to make a "page" for each special even call sign, and then have a volunteer update each call with the dates that call is activated, for what special event, and points-of-contact?

Alternatively, link each page to the 1x1 call sign page along with a generic message, ie: "The one-by-one call sign is for special events of a short duration only. Refer to http://www.1x1callsigns.org for specific dates this call is active and the responsible party for that particular operation."

Also, perhaps QRZ could allow responsible organizations with recurring events, ie: 13 Colonies, to have a permanent page on QRZ.

That puts a lot of work on the backs of volunteers - Probably not practical

This does not work because the 1x1 call sign page does not currently provide an entry for event URLs

Also, perhaps QRZ could allow responsible organizations with recurring events, ie: 13 Colonies, to have a permanent page on QRZ.

Even if the 13 Colonies had a permanent page, how could it link to the special event call (K2L) page and vice-versa?

What seems to be the best solution is for the 1x1 call sign database to include an entry for a URL.
