Last night we installed the latest version of the world's most popular Web based HTML editor, CKeditor version 4.33. You will find a few new features in the bio editing area. Overall, it has been a great upgrade. We now support 65 different languages, for example, and have some handy new features. We have also removed the 'Do Not Paste from Word' restriction, because the new editor now supports it!

Please note that if you use Internet Explorer as your browser that the minimum required version of IE is now 8.0, which was released in 2008. We generally recommend that you install the latest version available. I'm running IE 11.0 with no problems whatsoever on my Windows 7 machine.

Why do we change things when everything is going well? It's to avoid new problems down the road. By keeping our software up-to-date, we can always get fixes, patches, and updates from our suppliers, along with any new features that come along. For those of you who work in Information Technology, you surely know what I'm talking about. You either stay current or you eventually crash. It's not an 'if' but a 'when' as you will surely regret not keeping up with technology if your business is technology based.

Moving forward, some of you may have noticed some new content guidelines that we've published on the editing page. I wanted to take a moment to explain some changes. The list seems to have a lot of "NO this" and "NO that" restrictions, however, most of these are already rules that we practiced and many are just common sense. A couple of new rules, however, are very important.

Since QRZ policy is to provide a family friendly experience, we must exert control over what types of content our users upload onto the site. We have recently completed two reviews of our website image collection, now numbering more than 950,000 pictures. Many items were removed, and some of these depicted some of the worst possible behavior imaginable. Other items, while not particularly lewd or pornographic, were still unsuitable for family audiences and they were removed as well. We've also installed a new picture monitoring system that notifies the QRZ editors of every new object that is uploaded to our system, sometimes numbering 500 or more, every day.

Moving forward, we are adopting some new policy changes. Effectively immediately, users may no longer display images on QRZ that are hosted on other websites. If you want a picture shown on QRZ, then you must upload it to QRZ. Some items, which are dynamic and are loaded as pictures, will be allowed. These include maps and charts from sites such as flagcounter.com, revolvermap.com, and weather underground. More sites will be approved as we go. In general, we don't have a problem with sites that provide data in graphical form. Personal photos and images must be uploaded to QRZ for display on our pages.

Secondly, the use of IFRAMES on the QRZ pages must be curtailed. An IFRAME is a box within a web page that displays the contents of another web site. Since we have no control over what can be shown in an IFRAME, we cannot possibly allow their unrestricted use. We will also create an approved IFRAME source list in which we will allow some content.

We will be applying these changes incrementally over the next few days. We will attempt to show place holders in callsign pages where unauthorized content has been removed. Please note that for ordinary photos, you can always upload them to QRZ and display them as usual.

Our thanks to everyone for their cooperation and understanding as we continue our work to keep QRZ safe and friendly.

    This begs two questions Fred;

    1. If I upload my pictures to QRZ do they become the property of QRZ.com?

    1. If I read this correctly you are saying I and others here can no longer link to pictures on our own websites or photobucket? Is this true?

Question number one is quite important, as you might realize question number two is just some clarification.

How did you go through nearly a million images to find the bad ones? Is there software for that? Amazing.

Unless that is the answer, I wonder why Fred keeps all those pix?

    Hello Fred,

-For me, a left handed site editor, your revamp job is one hundred percent well done, Its easy now to do some sort of correction
which, in the former version was a real burden, at last for me.

    thank you and a Vy73 from Nicolau-PP8DA

I'm still wondering why the pics of my radios, and the scenery around my QTH were removed from my bio? They were on the QRZ servers and absolutely none were even a 100 miles away from being inappropriate...? :(

I'm concerned about the IFRAMES restriction. Ham radio is my hobby and my profession is documentary film maker and I intend to combine the two (hence the call, W2VIDeo). My IFRAME videos from vimeo.com allow me to post videos without putting a load on qrz.com servers or having to upload really large files of video data. People who have visited my page have complemented me on the use of the videos. I really hope I do not have to lose them. But suppose someone puts up an html link -- can't that be just as evil as an embed or an IFRAME? I appreciate your dilemma, but censorship is such a slippery slope. Sometimes on a razor blade!

I guess I'm wondering what's up with the Logbook? And, why don't the buttons at the top of the page drop down and work? I have to type my call into the search box to get to my page, then, there's no Logbook, or explanation why.

Regardless of QRZ's position as owner or not, by posting a picture on QRZ you've used the QRZ platform to share that picture (and your ownership) freely with the world. What happens with your picture in the world at large is on you. If you're worried about ownership of a picture here, I don't think the QRZ staff will be the source of trouble.

I'd venture a guess that if pushed, QRZ would say that by loading a picture here you are transferring liberal usage rights to them without transferring ownership. Ownership comes with responsibility and frankly, no picture on here is worth that, save the logo in the top left.

What is the scenario you're concerned with?

My online logbook/"map of stations worked" is hosted on HRDLOG.net and was an iFrame box on my QRZ bio. I changed it to the image version in case, but I don't like it as it doesn't look that great. Will you allow this iFrame so I can display my log and map on QRZ without using the V2 widget (which doesn't have a map or the time of QSOs)?

    Fred:

I salute your desire to keep this family friendly. I've never seen a bad photo on here, but with 950,000 I am sure there were a few that were tasteless.

I think your policy on images is a good one. I would advise you to put a disclaimer on your upload page that says that anyone posting a photo represents they have the copyright to that photo. I doubt people would post copyrighted images but you never know.

    I, too, am curious.
I went back to check out some pages from folks I've recently worked and the pics of their rig/setup are gone. What else are we not being told?
