New affordable remote service now available

NY, March 5, 2014: RemoteHamRadio.com is proud to announce the release of a new revolutionary technology and service called “WebDX”. This new technology has removed the requirement for downloadable software and hardware to remote on the popular RemoteHamRadio.com station network. The new WebDX service has a very affordable one-time signup fee of $99 and the operator is simply billed per minute for the usage on the sites. This service is for amateur radio operators that may be living in HOA, restricted communities, City, nursing homes and the traveling ham to “get on the air” with only a portable computer and an internet connection.

RemoteHamRadio.com is the first service of its kind to offer amateurs the ability to operate world class stations from anywhere. Today RHR offers two services, PremiumDX which is for the serious operator with access to big stations and the new WebDX service which is focused for affordability and portability.

I had an opportunity to use WebDX during a beta test period in February. The service is excellent and easy to use. I was able to contact over 80 countries in a few days of casual use in the evenings while on a business trip. WebDX works great even if you are using a cell phone for Internet access. I was able to use an iPhone Personal Hotspot effectively for CW and SSB contacts. The 80 meter 4-square and 160 meter antennas work very well and are a great opportunity to experience low-band DX if you don't have room for a good antenna. The Quaker station is particularly effective and I was able to break numerous pile-ups because of it's good signal.

You know. I got into being a ham for the single reason of "working DX" - I find it fascinating that someone can have a conversation (or try in some cases) via a radio to a station thousands of miles away, and all the troubles of finding that DX station to talk with, fiddling with this that and another thing and the constant droning sound of static and white noise and the wife asking how many more antenna's I plan on putting up - since the neighbors are asking her, and why "her" SAAB 9000 Turbo convertible must have an antenna ..for just in case we take that one ..... Since I'm a tad older then the "iDevice" generation, but still utilize moore's law - for current pricing of >15 year young and newer radios, I'm lost on why someone would do something like this. I can also pick up my 'droid and check the userlist of Zello and have a GSM quality conversation with a group or single person, that same "thousands" of miles away...but wheres the fun? Wheres the hobby? Wheres the weird looks from the peeps walking their mutts in the 'hood? IMHO Cheers.

Wow, "...as little as $0.15/minute. Our PremiumDX service rates start at $0.33/minute." They hide their full pricing on their website. But, I did notice in their demo video that the rate was $0.49/minute so ~$30.00/hour.

I don't understand the appeal of using someone elses radio in another location via the internet. Why not just use something like EchoLink from you phone or PC, or just make randomly dialed phone calls and log them has DX. But, there must be a market for this sort of thing.

I received notice of this today:

"[FONT=&amp]RemoteHamRadio is pleased to announce to a private select number of people our new revolutionary technology. We call this new technology WebDX and we have also created a completely new service around it. The service will be "invite only" and we only have a set number of available seats as we are just getting started."

More power to them and I hope they do well. There is a "start-up" fee of $99. Then, you pay per minute.

I'm not sure how I got on their mailing list. Turns out I can operate my home rig remotely and it doesn't cost me anything, other than what I've put into my own shack.

I think the technology is great. Not so sure I would pay for the use of someone elses station though. (Not knocking those who would though.) I can't explain it, but it doesn't feel right to me. Just my .02 worth.

That was sort of my feeling above as well. But, on second thought, there are likely plenty of hams who are unable to put up towers and the such, yet do have the resources to do so along with the money if they only lived somewhere that allowed towers. No one really bats an eye at someone for putting up a big tower and enjoying it, but use that same money to pay to use a remote station and somehow it doesn't feel right. Yet, I know exactly what you are saying.

The march of technology has allowed all sorts of things to come to pass that didn't feel right at first, but we get used to it (sometimes). I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there that wouldn't mind "operating" a world class station with big beams and towers, from the comfort of their home computer, for just a few dollars. We shall see!!

dOH! forgot to end with ...the reason I stood upon my soap box, is, I don't believe something like this should ever be referred to as "ham" or "amateur" radio in any way shape or form.

If I read the regs correctly a station operator can't engage in anything on the air in order to make money. This doesn't qualify. The people who own it are not the operators on the air and so aren't violating any FCC reg by renting out time on their rigs.

§97.5 Station license required.
(a) The station apparatus must be under the physical control of a person named in an amateur station license grant on the ULS consolidated license database or a person authorized for alien reciprocal operation by §97.107 of this part, before the station may transmit on any amateur service frequency from any place that is:

"Physical Station" means the actual equipment being used to transmit is the responsibility of a licensed amateur where the equipment is located.

§97.113 Prohibited transmissions.
(a) No amateur station shall transmit:

(1) Communications specifically prohibited elsewhere in this part;

(2) Communications for hire or for material compensation, direct or indirect, paid or promised, except as otherwise provided in these rules;

The person who is responsible for the physical station is being hired by other remotely located control operators to use his station.

Free = legal. Charge money to use your transmitter = illegal.

If I can summarize my interpretation of previous post:

Amateur Station W2RE or others have physical control of the equipment at remotehamradio.com, he is accepting paid compensation for handling communications for remotely located control operators.

It doesn't matter whether the remote control is being done via internet, phone line, radio, microwave, or tin can and string, you CAN NOT accept money for use of your station!
