    Default FT-8900 volume

I replaced my FT-7900 with a FT-8900 (in my truck).

    I love it, except....
I have to keep the volume on all the way all the time. Sometimes I turn it down a little when someone is coming in strong. Usually all the way up is OK, and sometimes not enough. I get a little road noise from the truck, but this was never an issue with the 7900.

I bought a cheap ($30) external amplified speaker and it sounds horrible. I don't mind spending more if it solves the problem. But I'm not sure that that is the answer. I originally thought that there was something wrong with the radio but I talked to a guy who had just bought one and he said his was the same.

Does anyone out there have a FT-8900 and want to share your story with me? Is yours OK? Did you have the same problem? What did you do about it?

    Thanks in advance

The radio is fairly compact and so is the speaker. With that said I have a Toyota Avalon and mounted the head unit in the hollow space behind the pocket that is below the FM radio. There is flip down cover that covers the radio and the pocket. Even with the cover down the audio is fairly good. I think you might have figured the problem out yourself. You bought a cheap external speaker. I find the audio quality of the radio fine. Try a better speaker, perhaps an amplified one..
