I have an Icom IC-211, which was the earlier model to your Icom IC -251A.
Icom IC-251 The 251 is basically a more advanced version of the 211. The Main unit is almost the same.
The PLL and Logic are very different. The biggest issue with the 251 is the CMOS logic.
It "glitches" and is very static sensitive. USE ESD protection and anti-static mats on repair bench!!
The CPU and Expander are no longer available new.
Generally it is very reliable, and needs very little maintenance.
In my case with the IC-211, a former Motorola repair technician - had tried to substitute NTE parts for RF finals - which was a disaster - and that section of the radio had to be totally rebuilt.
I bought it -- knowing this -- at sent to Scott at MTS, since he knows this model and had the original Japanese RF parts -- in stock!!
Scott Malcom at MTS Ham Radio Repair does work on this late 1970s/early 1980s
2-meter all mode radio.
