Recording streaming audio in Windows 7
Ok, for years I have been able to record streaming audio in Windows XP using Creative Media Organizer. But , I recently aquired a computer with Windows 7 on it. I installed the Creative Media Organizer on it but when I try to select the recording source, this tab is now grayed out and unavailable.
Is there an easy-to-use (free) program for Windows 7 for recording streaming audio and making an MP3 for a portable device or playback.
Thanks
It's all about the antenna! Build the antenna. Put up a bigger antenna, put up a better antenna, you can never over achieve when it comes to antennas!

I have never tried it, but the free Audacity has a very good reputation. There is also a pgm TotalRecorder that I think does this. Not tried.

Thanks Tom, I think I skimed over that and forgot to bookmark it. I'll download and try it on the Win7 machine.
I'll look at the other one too.

Let me know how they work out. Should be able to record anything you hear. I want to do this but not high on my priority list.

You can use Action! software. It records videos and audio in perfect quality. Everything about Action is at www.mirillis.com

I tried the Audacity program. It's neat, but a little too "busy" for what I use it for. You can slice, patch and manipulate audio down to the bit level - which is cool for sound bite editing or something like that.
So,
I tried the Total Recorder and that seems to suite me a little better. I think you can do many complex things with that one too, but the interface is simpler to me. Just click, record and then save it. I purchased the Standard Edition online just now. They emailed the registration key, plugged it in and bam! I'm back in business. They have higher versions of this recorder, and they say you can download upgraded versions of your purchased player for free. As far as I'm concerned, the Total Recorder is the way to go - for me anyway! Thanks for the suggestion and I'm glad I tried it. I still use Creative on my XP laptop here in the shack, but at least I have a means to record on the "main" home PC. The kids use it more than me anyway.

Thanks for the summary. What did TR cost? Is there a suitable free version? I haven't really looked into it.
I checked, it is $17.95, think I will pass for now, just wouldn't use it that much.
I just found a free program that may do the same thing, Freesoundrecorder.exe. Haven't tried it. You may find it, mine is
probably very old.

I just checked the Freesoundrecorder but I think it only records from an external source. Not what I want to do. Will check the Action.
Action is not free. Bummer.

Total Recorder is pretty good. I bought it many years ago for some reason I don't remember now but it seems like I get free upgrades for life. I use it occasionally and I always seem to be able to go to their web site, recover my license key and install the latest version on my current computer.
I've used it a few times to "download" audio from a site that only provides a Flash player with no download. I play it and "catch" it with TR to an MP3 file and then listen to it while driving.

Not free, but I've used Replay products to do exactly that for a long time. (Couple of my favorite radio shows didn't have podcasts available.) http://applian.com/replay-media-catcher/
