Default HRD and the Yeasu FT857

OK folks! I'm new to this stuff so please bare with me. I have a Yeasu FT857 that I had been using MIXw and a SignaLink audio card to use for CW and all modes. I work all CW and other digital modes and this was fine. The problem I had was that in MIXw the frequency did not change with my tuning dial on the rig and visa versa. So I went and bought a CAT cable for the rig, installed the drivers and connected it to the PC which is a Dell Inspiron 1200 running Windows XP SP3. Downloaded HRD and now have the frequency controlled either by the software or the radio. I hit the TX button in the CW mode and nothing. The transmitter keys but no power output. No power is evident in any mode. I have been playing with this thing for a few days now and no luck. So I need some real help here.

    Here is the setup:

From a USB port on the back of the laptop I have a CAT 62 cable with FTDI chipset connected to the CAT/Linear jack on the back of the FT 857.

From HRD I can see the frequency change on the FT857 when I move the cursor on the software program and also see the software change frequency when I tune the FT857.

The SignaLink is disconnected from both the FT857 and the laptop.

I know that I am missing something here but for the life of me I can't figure it out. And the help files in HRD don't do much for me either as they are just a jumbled mess. Nothing is there for a quick setup to get on the air.

So any help that anyone could give me would be really appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bill WA3DOG

What version of HRD are you trying to use ?

How are you controlling your CW RF output Power ?

Thanks for getting back so fast Don. Here is the info with a word document showing HRD main screen and a PDF file hat shows how I am wired here.

    HRD Version 4.1 Beta---It was a download---Build 2321

As far a controlling the CW RF output power, that is where I am stuck. When I click on the TX icon in HRD, the FT857 keys up but there is no output in any mode. I am at a loss on this. Does HRD generate its own CW tone for the CW mode or do I need another device some where? If the Yeasu FT857 is set to CW, will HRD key the transmitter? Right now, HRD just keys the transmitter but there is no power output.

You do realize we have remote support to help you with these things with our paid support option.

And 5.0 beta is like REAL old.

99% of the time it's just configuration too. This issue you are having is one of the standard issues when someone is new to HRD.

BTW, we do have a manual on the website now too, if you want to continue to debug it yourself...

First off sir, I do not need to be rediculed on these forums. If my problem is so common standard), at the least you could of assisted me rather than give me a ration. It is people like you that gives ham radio a bad name!!!!

You may want to try com port 1-4 and see if that helps any.

I think that is the only ports that your version of HRD will work with.

You may get a different answer from HRD paid support, But sometimes a free answer is nice.

Many would like a better answer than Pay for HRD support to get help.

Will your Radio put power out when a CW key is connected ?

    Hi Don,

HRD works with ANY port that is installed. My radio is on COM 44.

That would be "so 80's" to only support com 1 to 4!

It depends what OS you are using. He is using XP.

So what could the problem be ? Or does a person have to pay first ?

5.0 beta is not supported by us even by phone. Everyone needs to be on the latest release for support..that is the first thing I'd have him do with paid support, the second is I'd log into his computer remote becase it could be hardware or software.

My guess is cabling.. But no way to be sure without looking at his settings first.
