    I like the simple CMOS inverter crystal tester. Take a 4011 NAND gate and connect the two inputs together. Ground them through 22 pF. Place a 10M ohm resistor from the inputs to the output. Connect the XTAL across the 10M resistor.

    Sometimes CMOS can be picky about frequency especially if it has a 5Vdc power supply. I usually use a SN7400 or other IC's in it's class. It works just fine and it really put out the harmonics.
