Why do you assume it's Kenwood's selection of an "inefficient" transistor? The TS-2000 has LOTS of circuits that consume power, more so in transmit mode than in receive. All those circuits consume power, but that's the price you pay for the "bells and whistles" of a so-called "DC-to-Light" radio. The TS-2000 isn't designed to be a "QRP" radio; don't ask or expect more (or less) than the original design parameters.
