    Default A step into History - KC4DX

I wish I was a ham during this time, as it would have been wonderful to work these guys. I'm proud to know a few of these guys. Take a step into history, and check out the DXPedition from 1972 to Navassa Island!

An amazing story and a fun read. Now, where did I put my KC4DX card?

I was 12 and not yet licenced. I remember listening to all the talk on the repeater and hearing it on my HR-10B...

Just as a side note, one of the lessons of life I can provide at no charge:

There are two kinds of history, that permanent history which records momentous events like world wars, first climb of Everest, first man on the moon and a relative history, relative to other events or lifetimes like first man to speak on radio, first man to drive a car, first road in Washington DC., top show-biz name in 1922.

No matter how momentous we consider relative history, it WILL be forgotten.

As near as I can determine there have been at least 12 dxpeditions to Navassa Island, and at least one unauthorized one by the Haitians which also claim it. In 1980 I flew to the Island to help retrieve avionics and other salvageable parts from a Cessna that crash landed on the island. I have a QSL card from the 1978 dxpedition operating as N0TG/KP1. I was on Gitmo at the time (KG4HC) and we provided some assistance to them. Since the Island was, and still is, a major transhipment point for illegal drugs they were a bit concerned about their security. We provided an unofficial radio guard for them in case of problems. Fortunately the expedition went off without incident.

Thanks for sharing a really interesting and well-written article. The island is surprisingly remote--recently I was on a big cruise ship that went between Navassa and Haiti and even from the top deck you couldn't see it (I asked). Also, I understand the bottom of the ladder has been removed to discourage visitors, which will make entry even tougher. That said, it would be great if the feds okayed another DXpedition. After the KP5 effort went off so well I thought they'd allow one here. Hopefully in time they will.
