See your doctor, ask his advice, have some tests and do what he says.
^^That last bit is good advice. My physician makes recommendations after reviewing the results of blood and urine tests and asking a lot of questions during the interview portion of my annual physical. She usually calls for new tests about three months later to see if whatever was suggested works.

St. Johns Wort, I've been taking it for 9 months now twice a day. It evens my mood swings and I don't need the anti-depressant drug. I tried going off that with disastrous results so I had to try something else. It has been proven useful in several clinical studies in Europe, though it has been dismissed as a placebo by the USA medical establishment. I don't care what they say, it works for me and people around me notice the difference. It was first used by the Romans, so it's got a long history.

I'd always check with my physician first, but if she said "go for it," I'd try any sort of natural remedy available for anything.

One of the main reasons for checking with the doc first is she has all my blood panel results and can take a peek to see if she believes anything I might take could have a negative or unwanted influence, or potentially react with medications.

I take a multivitamin/mineral supplement daily, as recommended by her. I also take one asprin a day, just because -- and the doc recommended that also, unless I have a planned surgery or something.

Throwing Christians to the lions was also introduced by the Romans, so I'm not sure I'd want to follow everything they did. But there's no doubt that many "ancient cures" are still around because people think they work -- and they probably do work. Stuff made from tree bark, flower seeds and mold have saved many lives.
