    Default UNID (unidentified) HF phenomenon

I finally got a recording of a UNID phenomenon i hear on a daily basis on the HF amateur radio bands including the aeronautical and military frequencies in the HF spectrum.Im sure at some point you will have heard this signal whilst in QSO or general listening but im intrigued to learn what its purpose is.
The UNID transmits 8 pulse's at a time (as in my recording) and sometimes i hear another pulse in return as if they are talking to each other.
Having partly understood what superDarn and over the horizon radar is about, clandestine stations are out there, and some of them are unexplained.
    Have you heard this?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on my post.

    Recorded 28 June 2012 03.00 GMT 14.315.0 Mhz

My guess is that this is ionospheric sounding, examining propagation, but I stand to be corrected.

    That is most likely ALE.

    This page tells all:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat...o_ALE_channels

If you scroll down the page there is a little graphic showing the eight tones - to start the "handshake" sequence.

First world white man country military tactical radios. Here's some on 15m as heard from PA:

After the eight bursts, they hop around. Can be found on 80-10m. Hard not to miss, as there are so many of them.

I see the waterfall/pan display, It is exactly what i see here and agree its the same source. But what technology is it?

Looking on the internet for any wav.files or mp3, utube for ALE audio sample's etc etc is negative.i found nothing that sounds like the file i posted here.
Please send me the link if YOU find it.
But yes.its closely related technology i think.
    Just darn curious.

It's first world white man country military tactical radio - not the best label, but since the kit is made by multiple manufacturers I think is better than the "Racal Panther-H" used by SWL/amateur intruder-chasing world to describe it. Better would refer to the STANAG specification for how it hops & the STANAG specification(s) for either or all of the following: method of encryption, formatting of data (if this is data, instead of digitized voice) & the modulation used.

I prefer "first world white man country military tactical radio" as it describes not only what they are, but also who uses them. Credit where credit is due - the intruder boogey man is NOT who we're being told it is.

Rob, there's no question, your recording is of this stuff. For where it might be from, here's a VOACAP coverage map for short path at the time:

    And long path:
