A used Ten Tec Omni VI. They are selling between 600 and 1000 bucks, depending on the revision level and filters.
Add all the filter options, and the Inrad SSB and CW roofing filters, and the RX will compete with the best of them.
Low noise synthesizer, and receiver that can really dig out the weak signals. Easy to work on, the box is large and all of the PC boards
are accessible. Front panel is big enough for fat fingers to find the right knobs and buttons. Simple menu system with enough bells to
keep most of us OTs happy. QSK CW, reasonable TX IMD specs on SSB. BIG LED display, easy to read. Ten Tec support is seond to
none.

I got an Omni V some time ago and when K3AC advertised his VI+ here I JUMPED on it. What a NICE piece of gear. The V is not bad either, just a little less stable and fewer features. Dunno about the best ever... Hilberling (among others) is out of my range.

Never used a Hilberling. Saw it at Dayton under glass, the insides looked awesome.
But.... at that price..... I could also get a great Ten Tec, feedline, tuner, amp, shed at Home Depot, pellet stove and still have cash left over for munchies!

Wow, disappear for a couple years and you find how dated a signature can be!

Hilberling Radios . . . http://www.hilberling.de/de/de_ham/ham.htm
Now that's the pentultimate home-brew artist. Just hold on to your wallet; these make a virgin Collins S/Line look like hamfest junk.

If that's the penultimate home brew, I surely would like to see the ULTIMATE home brew.
