ANTENNA TUNER AT-50

I am relatively new to amateur radio. I just bought a used Icom 7000 from a friend. I have a Kenwood AT-50 antenna tuner. My question: Can I use the AT-50 to tune the Icom 7000? Thanks, James KJ6YAP

No. The signaling for the Kenwood is entirely different than Icom's, and no one makes a cross-emulator.

Yes you can, but it won't be "automatic" like it is when connected to a TS-50, and you will need to connect to a different power source than the radio.

The manual is available online to download, page 14 tells how to use it manually with a radio other than a TS-50.

I had one a few years back, pretty decent tuner.

Again, you can use the AT-50 with any radio that puts out 100W or less in the frequency range of 1.8 to 29Mhz. The operations manual details that proceedure.

The issue here is, does it work automatically with the Icom. No it does not! Can it work? Yes. If you want to go to the trouble to build a cable that hasn't been available from Kenwood for over 10 years.

The other big issue is, although the AT-50 has some built in protection about over driving, if you dump 30 or more watts to it while tuning a non-matching transceiver to it, you'll end up with a pile of junk!

There are just somethings that shouldn't be done, even though they can be done. Think about it!

James asked if a AT-50 could be used with a Icom 7000. The answer is yes, but manually, as you can with any other 100w radio it wasn't originally intended to be used with.

He said he already has the AT-50. Building a cable is much cheaper/easier than buying another tuner.

James will have to pay attention to his drive level when he tunes it, just like he would with a manual tuner or amp. I don't remember from my short time using a 7000 if it has one or not, but my radio has a button that can be set for a specific cw power output when pressed, eliminating the need to adjust pwr out for tuners and such.

He has it, I see zero reasons not to use it.
