    Default Sacrilege

As an true Icom fanatic this saddens me. Not only is smoking hard on the radio imagine what their lungs must look like!

    Cough.

Isn't there a liquid, plastic-safe cleaner that you can just dip the whole radio into that would dissolve/remove all that gunk?

I bet that if there is a computer nearby where the radio lived its innards are caked with tar, too. Yuk!

Dunno if there's a miracle cleaner to clean that up in one go but he sure made it look better!

The guy sure did it the hard way!

Rubbing alcohol is OK - but the yellow, regular formula "Listerene" mouthwash ( regular or store brand ) cleans that crud away LOTS faster.

Back in the old glass-tit CRT days, I used Listerene to clean computer monitors. No streaks, plainly superior to actual glass-cleaning products. - Cheaper too, needless to say!

It is also superior for removing accumulated dead skin and grime ( scum-grip ) on the steering wheel and arm rests in an old car or truck.

I wouldn't use it on a guitar fingerboard as the alcohol in it would tend to dry out the wood - but I would not hesitate to use it on the body of the guitar.

They end up with scum-grip on them, just like an old car's steering wheel.

I have used it to restore a few old Kenwoods and recommend it highly.

As with all clean-up stuff, test it on an area that is invisible or hard to see before you start using it on the front panel and its lettering - to be sure that its ingredients are compatible with your particular radio's finish.

Not only that, Charles, but it leaves your radio minty fresh and prevents its filters from getting cavities.

I hope this doesn't mean that a cherry IC-765 is about to hit the market.

Here is my experience with smoke! This Johnson 6N2 VFO was a sticky dark brown when I got it. I had to use the NOVUS #2 to burrow through the smoke to get to new paint which was grey!

    GAWD...
    That radio was disgusting.....
It sure cleaned up nice though.....

I generally replace meter lamps with lamps and add a ten ohm resistor to limit inrush current.
The end result is unless the radio gets a lot of shock and vibration you only replace the bulbs once.
