I'm generally not into such things but I'm a lot less into destroying nature for short term gain.
The 'scientific data' excuse is clearly a load of old cods to provide a weak excuse for a capitalist enterprise.
I'm also a capitalist but I strongly disagree with destruction of the environment to make money.
I have to vote in favour of the environmentalists (Even if I don't always agree with how they go about it).

I can't blame Paul Watson for trying to stop whaling. There's no telling how many times he's been mistaken for one. Does anyone know what maritime rights the Japanese have to defend themselves? I'd love to see them fire a harpoon at "Admiral Watson's" flag ship.

They shot him with a rifle once. The bullet hit his vest & badge but did no real harm.
Personally, I understand what they're trying to accomplish and also why, but I don't always agree with their methods.

What an amazing stroke of luck that Admiral Watson decided to wear body armor whilst on his ship in the Antarctic. Who could have predicted that he would be shot by an invisible rifle out there? (Other than him, of course.)

I'm not a huge supporter of Watson in particular (his 'our crew has been kidnapped' ploy is downright asinine), and there's been a large controversy surrounding the whole incident. However, I do believe he was actually shot. The whaling boats use high-powered rifles to shoot harpooned whales that don't die quickly enough. The incident happened while the Shepherd's were throwing glass bottles (that sounds eco-friendly) of a weak, non-toxic acid (basically fermented butter) at the Japanese ships to spoil the meat & the Japanese were returning the favor by throwing back flash-bangs. I wouldn't doubt for a minute that someone on the whaling boat took the opportunity to disguise the sound of their rifle. A lot of the controversy has focused on how convenient it was that he had just started wearing the body armor. However, this was towards the beginning of their 'campaign' & a lot of different groups were getting concerned that the tactics grow more aggressive each year. Was it fabricated? Hard to say.
I do believe the whaling needs to stop and the Japanese whalers and government are breaking international law by doing so. The 'research' they claim is a very thin veil and an outright lie for the Japanese government's financial profit.
I also believe that the Sea Shepherds are also breaking international law with their methods & techniques, many of them absolutely irresponsible & moronic.
Reminds me of some elections (on any level) where you're forced to vote for the evil of two less-ers.

Keep in mind that most commercial body armor won't defeat a round discharged from such a rifle. Nor would his pretend badge have stopped one.
