I have lost count of how many tone boards I installed in ham's mobile and handheld rigs in the 70's when the FM craze first hit ! Kept me busy after work for a long time, also setting freq on added XTALS as new repeaters came on line !
I also get a chuckle; during the transition from AM to FM, The AM guys always got excited when tropo brought signals across the lake from Cleveland, or across the state from Grand Rapids, It was fun to work those guys.
On FM repeaters the same "DX" was considered a NUSANCE so the repeater owners added CTCSS to thier receivers. Then some of the locals thought it was to keep certain individuals off the repeaters with the cliques who did not like outsiders. What a riot.
