You still don't seem to "get it". It doesn't matter what the radio does TX-wise. I've worked Haiti more times than I can count. It's not that hard. I've worked the USVI on 2.5 watts on phone. You're focused on the TX. Anyone can make a 100 watt transmitter.
What matters is that you can hear the station you want to work in the first place. If you can't hear them, you can't work them. Working any station depends on 2 things: he hears you and you hear him. If your RX is so wide to let splatter from 5Khz away interfere, then you can't complete the contact.
but i know 520 may be a bit out dated but it works for me... its not a 590 or 2000 or 950 or icom 756 pro mark whatever number .. but it gets the job done.. as far as a recevier its not up to par with someone of the older radios of its time.. but it does the job i pay for... which was 300 bucks... i plan on purchasing in the near future a new rig with 1.8 khz filter ... been a interesting discussion
If money is tight, you may want to look at the FT-450D. If you can spend a little more, I'd suggest the IC-7200. If you can stretch the budget further, I highly recommend the TS-590. This assumes you're buying new.

i realize now how big of a mistake it is to even post anything on qrz forums.... you have a bunch of arrigant snobbish ham operators out there that thing there gods gift to the hobby.. your not.. your just a first class a-hole... I will not ever ever.. post anything on this damn site again.. Ever.. if you dont have 10k radios .. then your not worth anything.. well if your stupid enough to pay ten thousand dollars for a radio.. your dumber then i am..

another thing... Ham radio operators that fine nets worthless.. my response is .. why are you in the hobby in the first place... Are you the type of operator who sticks to cw for 50-75 years and does code? thats pretty damn boring to me... one dimentional also... there are other aspects to the hobby besides cw.. try digital.. packets pactor psk31.. or ssb.. which i love... nothing like a good ol contact with phone operators... for those operators that dont like echolink and dont think its ham radio .. tough cookie... you are blind as you are stupid.......(no pill for stupid by the way)
I have been a operator for 3 years.. and the rumours of hams being arragent.. self rightous.. are right on the damn money.... NOT ALL HAMS ARE THAT WAY.. I find your attitude and response repugnant. Obviously, anyone who disagrees with you is wrong, so there's no point in trying to discuss this issue.
I also use old, "Less that $10.000" equipment, and sometimes have interference. I accept the fact that not EVERYONE is going to move 10 kHz away from my chosen signal, and it's not good Amateur Practice to expect that. We must SHARE all of the Amateur frequencies.
To simply state that any or everyone that disagrees with you or causes you interference whenever you operate is ARROGANT and not in keeping with the Amateur Spirit, and totally a contradiction of your original post.
Please look at yourself in the mirror. You state : "and the rumours of hams being arragent.. self rightous.. are right on the damn money.... NOT ALL HAMS ARE THAT WAY.. "
Perhaps you need to look at your own attitude.

A $700 TS-940S, $600 IC-751A or a $500 TR-7 will do a lot better job at working crowded bands that the '520. These are advertised every day in the site's Classifieds area.

In other words, you're not going to take technically sound advice from people who do know what they're speaking of...'WIK and a few others being prime examples.

See my used rig commentary above. The Ten Tec Omni VI is another good choice. I just grabbed one of them with filters and the matching PSU for a little over $700.

Because ham radio isn't just "nets".
Are you the type of operator who sticks to cw for 50-75 years and does code?
Ahhhh, the strawman enters the argument. Been waitin' on ya...

Does the knob on your radio go to "11"? If so, you might want to turn it to there.

Right on. I can't and shouldn't expect every other operator to make sure they are 10 kHz away from MY signal. There's such a thing as "good Amateur Practice," as well as "good Technical Practice." Neither has specified 10 kHz spacing as accepted; generally accepted standards for SSB voice is 3 KhZ, and well designed radios have filters with rolloff above 2700 Hz. Our "friend" needs to conform to current standards for receiver filter response before stating that others are causing interference.

Bill, you don't even need 100 watts if A: propagation is working for you B: You have an optimized antenna and ground system C: You are using CW or Digital modes, or D: You have appeased the God of the aether.
Worked S58N , Slovenia, on 17m and II2POPE, Italy, on 15m, with my Kenwood TS-130-V . Both on SSB running 10 watts. It's amazing what multi-wavelength v-beam antennas will do. Put lots of wire in the air, as good a ground system as you can install, and bide your time to slide in between some of those "5 billion watt" stations.

That '130 has two features which the '520 doesn't: A "Nar"(row) filter selector (which will switch in the optional 1.8KHz SSB or 500/250Hz CW filters) and an IF Shift. In conjunction, those features will allow one to work a crowded band a lot more effectively than an FT-101/TS-520 class of radio.
Price?
I paid $275 for a nice example (an 'SE - 100w version) a couple years ago then spent another hundred on both optional filters.
