EMA Impostor
http://kfor.com/2012/05/31/emergency-management-impostor-busted-in-drug-sting/
Interesting story from KFOR-TV in Oklahoma on an EMA impostor. Actually Mr James Nimrod was a volunteer who took things a little extreme. I thought this was well on topic with certain Amateur Radio topics. Training is frequently brought into qustion as to how much of a benefit it actually provides. Often as part of the team building process in training it is discovered a volunteers capabilities as well as their character. Motives for being a volunteer can also be ascertained. In the area of Em-Comm training has benefits to both leadership as well as membership and the general organization beyond just the topics learned. Thank goodness Mr. Nimrod wasn't a licensed Amateur Radio operator.

Disasters seem to bring out the kooks. Proper identification (ID Cards) issued by organizations that have an ability to perform a basic background check is essential. Prior planning is important to avoid the last minute kooks.

Went to the ok state website after watching video. No creds are required to get the emergency management plates for your vehicle.

There's no need to put that crap on your car, because you are not operating an emergency vehicle, nor does having a radio exempt you from traffic laws. There's no emergency if you are playing radio at a fun-run, so your EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS traffic vest makes you look silly. Use one similar to the other race volunteers. The only people that are impressed with that EMERGENCY stuff are the wackers that buy it.

I like Sheriff Edwards' quote: “I don’t care who he is. If he’s selling crystal meth in Canadian County, he’s going to jail.”

I really don't know what that Nimrod was thinking

The kooks are attracted to the ID cards and other things that make them look and feel like they are some sort of 'official.' I'd wager that Nimrod (perfect name) drove his wacker-wagon all over the county and none of his civil defense or storm watcher buddies ever said a word to discourage it. Hell, they were probably jealous. Tens of thousands of legitimate emergency radio transmissions are made daily when someone calls 911 from a cell phone. Those callers didn't need any special IDs, vests, magnetic signs or decals and neither do we.

You did get part of your post right when all of the training, classifications, background checks, IDs and the clown suites came into the picture only the nimrods and kooks were left. All of the really competent and knowledgeable people who were actual leaders left and only the bureaucrats and appointed people who knew nothing of amateur radio were left to lead the unknowing. Now we see what has happened in a very short time and where it's going, we all should be ashamed of what we let happen to our "Hobby"!!
