    Default IRLP waste of money

I bought into that IRLP from David Cameron once.
Got the card for the computer, and everything else. Never worked. Contacted David several times and was always told I needed a differant item. Even tried to ask for a refund.
I've learned that unless its made from reputable company and not a fly by night maker that I'll never again buy into it.

I am curious, which item exactly did Dave tell you you needed? Was it the computer hardware that you are providing not being compatable with Linux?

I'd like to get in to IRLP... if you don't want that stuff, I'll happily accept a donation to my club to get up on IRLP. :-)

Don't you remember those translucent colored records? He bought an Infra-Red LP.

    I can't believe I just wrote that...

I bought the whole package deal: http://www.irlp.net/orderform.html
After everything was made, setup and working, I joined the yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/irlp/
and kept questiong when I'd receive the node that I was advertised. I was informed that I needed to pay an additional $30.00 for the node.
I never got a response from David Cameron VE7LTD even after I informed him of his advertisement that everything was to be included.

I don't think you quite understand how setting up an IRLP node works. The link you provided is to the part that goes in your computer, which must be linux based. There's more to it than that though. You have to connect a radio to the computer. The package deal does not include the radio. If you thought the $188 package would be all you needed, then you were mistaken.

I see there is a suggest $40 "Voluntary donation" for network services/support. He notes that if not adequately funded this may become a $30 mandatory fee.

It's impossible to tell what isn't working or what has been done. Can't you find another successful IRLP user to give you some coaching?

I have had no issue setting up and using IRLP hardware to date. Neither have any of the others I talk with or their repeater systems. IRLP is rather popular here. I don't have my own node or setup yet, but I do plan on it.

In the Dayton area we have numerous IRLP repeaters and nodes owner by various users. The group of simplex talkers I hang out with sometime activate a micronode to talk to people out of town. the micro node or pocket node whatever you want to call it, they are common on simplex just as much as many of our repeaters.

All in all I would say it is more difficult to set up the repeater and get that running smoothly. Setting up the node was little different than any other computer-radio hardware. If you can work with a TNC or any other radio to computer interface then the IRLP hardware shouldn't give you a problem.

I am guessing you wanted to set up something like a pocket node, or are you looking to a full on repeater with IRLP?

I've built 2 IRLP nodes now - so long as you do things the way it was designed, it's not only straight forward, but reliable and effective.

But, there is a learning curve. It's not a simple "plug 'n play" setup - you have to build it. If you're more of an appliance operator type guy, it may not be your best option.

I'm inclined to agree with the consensous. You seem to have had some mis-guided expectations or understandings. No biggie, just takes learning.
