Thanks Carl! Just what I need to hear about the MFJ subsidiary! I was already worried about that - now - I'm spooked!
I was leaning towards an ALPHA ........... if the cost was not prohibitive. IT IS! I love the grandson - but - there IS a limit! ME FIRST!

I'd save up some more bucks and go with an AL80B.
Far, far fewer hassles and very rugged.
Just a thought, good luck whichever way you decide to go.

With all the responses your getting I'm not sure you'll get to this one but I'll go ahead anyway. I live in a condo and about a year and a half ago I got back in to ham radio. I currently have an AL811 600 watt amp and have had no issues todate (knock on wood)..I had to replace my older CRT tv in the living room with a new LCD tv since the coax went directly behind the set an caused terrible tvi..Now no problem and I use an antenna ground and a artifical ground since I'm on the second floor..I also use a low pass filter..There is a touch lamp on my wifes desk that still goes on and off when I tune up. As long as your not over driving the amp there shouldn't be a problem...Jim

Wish my Grandpa wanted to purchase me an amp! Just my 02 cents.

Here you go: http://hintlink.com/power_density.htm
Plug in some numbers, bam! You did calculations.

He lives in a RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD in the ever popular TRACT HOME configuration. Lots are separated laterally by perhaps 25 or 30 feet at most then the next home begins. The BACK YARDS are approximately 100 feet deep where they then abut only a retaining wall and ANOTHER LOT begins; CLOSE PROXIMITY indeed!
My blessing and curse: Since I have always lived in some form of 'wide open space' I have never had to contend with RFI except to my own non-amateur radio related equipment. I was blessed to be able to run the legal limit and never really worry. HOWEVER, this limits my knowledge of the problems encountered in TRACT NEIGHBORHOODS when any amount of power is utilized.
IF I help the young man out and present him with an amplifier in perhaps the 600 to 800 watt range ...... will I perhaps be creating a great number of PROBLEMS for him DUE TO HIS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OTHERS in this TRACT HOME location?
This is one time where I wish I had a bit more knowledge from first-hand experience in "operating while keeping neighbors happy" - but, I have virtually none and do not want to create issues that might disrupt or diminish my great-grandsons liking for his new-found hobby.
Thank You in advance guys and gals,
Don -- WD5JOY (still avoiding the 'SK' addendum)
Without the slightest bit of doubt, I can assure you that an amp that puts out 600 watts isn't going to be an issue. Worst case, someone might hear a little noise on their computer speakers, but I even doubt that.

Hi Bryan and all ............... well now - I am as befuddled as can be (old guys get that way really easily!0. My gut and many suggestions told me to get him the amp. Worse case would have been that 'gramps' would wind up with the thing.
HOWEVER - his folks have just bought an older house and I now find the ELECTRICAL WIRING might be an issue. It is a 19050's era house - so there are two wires - no ground.
He called today to ask me about what to do with his antenna when they move. We installed a "fair ground" system at their current place - but it was for "RF" purposes more than anything; it does have the third wire ("ground wire"). Without that same setup at the new place -- I am back to "befuddled" as I noted above.
I DO appreciate all the input though --- I truly do. THANKS FOLKS.

The Microwave Police Reporters may go around looking for a CW signal on 2450 MHZ at lunch time.
There are inexpensive monitors for that.

Hmm. Which of these has more closely mirrored the autisim rise - composite RF exposure levels or vaccine exposure levels?

Gee I don't know....
Have they changed the formula for RF lately?
Or perhaps it's five to seven different kinds of RF at once that is causing autism.
