Never had much time for the German military, particularly the way they mistreated civilians and plundered and pillaged during the Great War 1914-1918. World War II was no better.
'Man's greatness lies in being faithful to the present moment.'
I was watching a BBC TV documentary which should interest some on QRZ. It is estimated that on the western front in the hours from 05.00 am until 11.00 am on the 11th November 1918 11,000 servicemen died needlessly. Three hundred US soldiers died on the orders of General Wright when he ordered the taking of Stenay in France. Many US soldiers died when General Pershing insisting on leading his American troops rather than them being a part of the Allied forces at Argonne. He used war tactics which were outdated and had failed early in the war,. He sent his men to attack German positions known to be strongly held by German machine guns
Henry Gunther is acknowledged as the last soldier to die on the western front at 10.59 am on the 11th November 1918. I think you will find this interesting. Micheal Palin is very good, some of you old enough might remember him ! But not as a TV presenter
