No they will want more and they will raise local taxes for more.
When was the last time you saw your tax bill drop?
Proposition 13 in your state did exactly that.

What scale of spying? It takes a person looking out the window, whether it be patrol car, helicopter, or drone.

I suppose that PVL will next advocate shooting at police helicopters and patrol cars.

When do police patrols become "spying"? Are you opposed to police patrols?

I think that Charles Krauthammer has pretty well shot down the idea of using drones on US citizens with his comment noting that the first patriot to shoot down one of them will be recognized as an American hero.

Now the feds know that there is a general "make my day" attitude out there concerning the use of drones to spy upon US citizens.

Judge Nepolitano (sp) put his finger on the sore point about unrestricted drone use here in the USA, when he reminded us that a warrant is required in order to legally utilize one of them.

Personally, I know how stupid cops tend to be, and I cringe at the thought of some drooling throwback in a police uniform being responsible for remotely piloting a dangerous piece of equipment over innocent people's heads. - It's a recipe for disaster, is what it is.

Highly trained Air Force personnel piloting a drone over a war zone is one thing... Bubba in a police uniform buzzing one around over an American city is something entirely different.

We'd have them crashing into buildings or electric lines and falling down on the folks below, whacking off arms and legs with the rotors, being used to spy on nekkid women who thought that they had a reasonable expectation of privacy in a fenced-in yard, drunken joybuzzing, harassment of ex-wives and their boyfriends, drone races, etc. etc. etc...

It's only limited by the dim imagination of some stupid cop, somewhere.

Using drones against US citizens is one of those particularly, spectacularly dumb ideas that only a sufferer of authoritarianism disorder could love.

We will all be much better off if the idea is dropped now, while the drones are still only being shot down in a figurative sense.

Some will have to learn the hard way though... - A few always do.

( Rubbing hands together in frank anticipation. )

If you prefer a police state, my best advice for you is to move far, far away from the United States.

Maybe you could try out Venezuela, they're nationalizing everything that isn't nailed down there, and shutting down any media or press that dares to complain. - It's perfect for you!

    All of that security.

You know what they say about that...

Those who would exchange freedom for security deserve - and get - neither one of them.

    I will add:

Those who would reduce the freedom of others in order to advance their personal security deserve mob justice.

So I'm guessing that you don't want any police patrols in your neighborhood unless their are crooks slinking around. Hmmm... wonder how they'll know that?

    And you know this how?
    Sorry no privacy no freedom.
Considering we have governments founded on different sets of rules I don't expect you to see the connection.

Actually I am apposed to police patrols that look over my fence and into my windows.
I object to someone in code enforcement using that data without a warrant.
Or animal control that might get nosy because I have six of my eight allowed dogs.

I'm with you, they should not be looking in your windows.

I have no problem with helicopters who may see into your fenced yard and see someone looking or breaking into your windows and you don't even know it.

There is a difference between patrolling and being singled out, whether it is from the ground or air, but some can't distinguish between the two.

PVL is ignorant. He mentioned cops who don't know what they're doing in control of drones. Do the police put people into helicopters who don't know what they're doing? Why isn't it obvious to him that the police would use people with the drones who know what they're doing? The only difference between a drone and a helicopter is the cost and where the observer is sitting.

I prefer a balance. Honorable men have done horrible things because their government asked them to. (Think German soldiers during WWII). They did these things believing they were improving their nation and the world only to feel shame later. Our country was born from the desire to escape a tyrannical government. The founders saw it imperative to provide tools in our constitution so that we could keep another tyrannical government from forming. This means that they too realized that no man was above reproach, and it was the citizens job to be the ultimate check on government. I don't fear the police or our military, I support them. I do however expect them to hold to the oath the swear. That means they are to protect and defend the constitution. That means they can't invade my privacy or enter my home without a warrant. If they do they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
