As near as I can tell from the article and the web-site that was cited, the island in dispute was NEVER a part of the Philippines.

So what's the issue here with Ham radio?

It would probably qualify as an IOTA entity, what about DXCC?

The Philippines says it has sovereign rights over areas of the sea within its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, and that its position is supported by international law.

    AFP, AP
It appears that the Philippine government is talking out both sides of it's mouth. There are multiple treaty agreements that clearly define the territories of the Philippines to exclude that island. They haven't included the island on their territorial maps at any point. They can't claim it just because it's within their 200 mile EEZ because other agreements supersede any claims they have on it even though it IS in the EEZ.

They'll be luck if they don't bring the entire Chinese military down on them.

Unless they can go back to the 1200's with documented claims to the reef, they don't have a leg to stand on

If you are citing "Several Treaties", please give details on what treaties you are talking about. The Scarborough shoal have been always a part of the Philippines. I don't know where you are getting your information.

The Filipinos are not afraid of the Chinese military if that is what you are trying to imply here. Filipinos are very friendly and hospitable people, but don't try to steal what is theirs and they will fight to death !!! Just for your information ...

That article posted by G4TUT have several incorrect details that the Official National Amateur Radio Association have already sent an email to G4TUt to correct it.

anyway.. this forum is about Ham Radio and not about some international political issues. PARA have clarified with G4TUT that no correspondence existed between PARA and ARRL regarding Scarborough shoal, as indicated in the Article or the chinese website.
PARA HAVE NOT SENT any correspondence to ARRL indicating that the shoal does not belong to Philippines.

To set the record straight, of recent date, the Philippine Amateur Radio Association did not have any such correspondence with the ARRL regarding the Philippines’ claim over the Scarborough Shoal.

The PAROrganization is not the same as the PARAssociaton. In fact, we are not aware of any such organization existing in the Philippines.

We fully support all diplomatic means to settle the dispute over the rocks between the Republic of the Philippines and China.

"Philippine amateur radio organization" needs to be written as "Philippine Amateur Radio Organization" in order to make it a proper noun.

Anyway, that really doesn't matter as what belongs to who was settled in a treaty - like the one for those islands between BV & JR6 that belong to JA but the Bravos insist belongs to them.

Is funny how as people we would get in trouble for breaking what is essentially a contract - but when our respective countries do this it's not only acceptable, we fall over ourselves to support it. |^(
