    Default License Statistics

Does anyone know of a way to find the number of registered Amateurs in a given county? From what I see on the ULS is you can search by state or city, but not by county. Any thoughts?

It's possible, but it will take a little work.

What you have to find out is which ZIP codes correspond to which counties in each state. I don't know if that's information that the USPS has compiled anywhere, though.

    A couple of caveats:
    - some hams mailing addresses does not match their actual station location. Might be a PO Box, or a family member's home, or a work address... you get the idea
-- the ZIP code is based on the location of the Post Office, which may not correspond to the county of license. For example, most 150xx ZIP codes are Beaver County PA, but some Allegheny County communities have 150xx ZIPs. Or, all 152xx ZIP codes are City of Pittsburgh Post Office, but not all 152xx communities are part of the City.
-- and of course, some hams have neglected to keep their license info up to date. But that's between them and the FCC.

    Good luck!

I know, I was just wondering specifically for York County SC (My QTH), I am working on some material for an ARES Project and need the stats but not sure how to get these stats.

If you go to the QRZ database, you can search by US county. It will give you a number. However, that number can be inflated due to several factors. If someone cancels a callsign such as when requesting a vanity call, you can end up with two entries. But, it's a ballpark guess.

Well, check the phone book for a list of post offices in your area. If it appears that all the ZIP codes in your county are 297xx... then do a download for all ZIP codes starting 297

    ?
I do know that there are no counties in Louisiana, they rather call them Parishes.

Interesting note the city and county of San Francisco share the same exact boarders. I've always wondered why they needed both a large city police department and also a sheriffs department?

Try this (though it appears to include ALL FCC licenses: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/d...nses&ctid=2358

You might also send a query to your ARRL Section: http://www.arrl-sc.org/

Hi David. Here's a resource you might find useful: ZIP CODE MAPS

Just type in the zip code in the "Key Zip" box, or the county and state in the "address" box, then click the "find zipcode" button. The map will show the zip code(s) for your selection. You can zoom in and out, drag to change the area, etc. You'll find that most counties have multiple zip codes that overlap the of neighboring counties and cities, but you might get luckier for the one in which you're interested.

Another tack might be to search the QRZ (or other) database for addresses including the county name and then add the results of searches for addresses with incorporated towns and cities in that same county. That should get you very close.

    Good luck!

Things have probably changed a lot since I had to do that for ARES. At the time, there was no online resource that would list licensee info by county. I went to the P.O. and they helped me determine all the ZIP codes in the county. Then I searched online each ZIP code (I can't remember if ULS or QRZ) and was able to print the licensees for each ZIP...very inefficient!
