Default Movin' on up! Upgrading to General

I have a Technician Class ticket and I will be taking my General test very soon. When I pass, will I be issued a new call sign automatically or can I elect to keep my present call sign? How does that all work?

    Thanks,
    James

When you sit for your test, the VE team will give you a Form 610 to fill out. The form will give you the option of retaining your current call or selecting another call from the sequentially assigned pool. The 'old' 1X3 General calls have been exhausted in all call districts. If you opt for a call sign change, you will be given another 2X3 call. The vanity application process is entirely separate from the testing and upgrade form.

They will set you up if you like a new call. Make sure the call you want is available and chose a couple extra just in case. Well unless the call you chose, is like your initials and you don't want anything else. You will be able to use your General privileges, but you have to wait til the new call comes up on the FCC ULS data base to use your new call.

I paid for my call on the FCC website. There are 1X3's out there from SK's. If you have a smart phone they can show you how at the exam site I'm sure

Also note: you can take the Extra Class test after you pass your General, it doesn't cost you any more money.

KJ4QVT, you might find it more profitable to postpone your test session until you're reasonable certain that you'll pass the Extra. As N8ZU writes, you'll save on test fees. Also, you'll get the whole darn licensing bit over forever so long as you renew your ticket on time.
