Oh yes good test gear to include in initial purchases. Just mentioned loading as so many have never had a tube rig or understand how Pi-network works and the dip and load instructions can be a little intimidating to many first time users of tube finals. Once RF drive is established will have to get SG switch back on and see if rig will produce output power. Will be handy to do that with dummy load and wattmeter!

Whoa! It looks like I'll have plenty to do for a while! I'll out of town again this next week, but I'll be back after that. Before we get completely off the topic of cleaning switches, etc, would it hurt anything to put dielectric grease on the rotors?

If you are talking about the wafers of the switch, You should keep them clean and Not apply anything that will attract dust and dirt.

In a word
Don't
All it will do is gum things up and attract a tone of dirt.

. . . Or three. . . One out of town, then one sick (that's no fun), then one way too busy catching up with the last two, but I'm still alive!
I've spent the last two days going over another (much better than my original) scope a friend gave me, and it works, at least as far as I can tell.
I'm going to start working through the procedures outlined by K9TW next week. Speaking of which, is there a corrected service manual anywhere online for the TS-820S? All I have is the original.

Cliff:
I know of no corrected Service Manual for the 820S. There are bits and pieces of stuff. Ken has some modified procedures on his website. Mods.DK has some stuff in the mods area. There are the 1970's vintage Kenwood Service Bulletins as well that add or change some stuff..
Also, you will need BOTH the Operator's Manual and the Service Manual because things are split between them. I had assumed that for maintenance the Service Manual would have everything but I was wrong.
Some of us over on the Yahoo TS-520-820 group have discussed writing a new Service Manual, with corrections and additions. There was a lot of enthusiasm, but we came to realize it represented a lot of work and no one has made any move in that direction to my knowledge.
Good Luck!

Hey Cliff, you can get the operators and service manuals on the BAMA site. It's here; http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/kenwood/ts820s/.
There are other manuals online and certain modifications that are detailed with information. Just do a web search and they will pop up.
Hope this helps

I should point out; the Yahoo group is a very useful resource.
I have been lurking there for a few years now....
