I remember old timers telling me they could identify an operator by his "fist" on CW. Well fast forward to today.

Cobblers ! However,the first part of your story was correct. During WW2 when the SOE parachuted agents into occupied France, they had been taught Morse code at their secret training groups and the code teachers became familiar with their style of sending. Many were caught by the Gestapo and never seen again, and on occasions German senders took over and began sending "duff" information. However they were at the time unaware that British code experts were able to recognise when messages were being sent by a different fist. Knowing the agent had probably been captured, false information was sent to the German military.
