FT-8100r dead

Friend was given this ft8100r by his friend whos Ham father passed away. No information about the history of this thing. Hooked it up to power and a know good antenna system. The needles on my SWR meter barely moved on both 2m/440 and would not receive signals from the local repeaters. Only receive a signal from my HT that was 3 feet away. The only thing that is visibly wrong with it is that the mic cord sheathing is coming off. Anyone have this problem or know where to start?

I have owned one since it was new. It has had very documented problem that there is and a couple more! I was able to repair most problems myself from the info I found in the above user group. It is a pretty good rig once you get past all the problems it may have so I hang on to it.
