And, the CRAZY ones, like me, buy BOTH.
1 T4XB, 1 R4B, 1 T4XC, 2 R4C's, 2 MS-4's and 2 AC-4's, one C-4, one L-4B, 1 KWS-1, 1 75A-4, 1 32V-2, 1 75A-1, 1 75S3-C, 1 32S-2, 1 312B-3, 1 312B-4, 1 516F-2, an HQ-150, and a Kenwood TS 480HX, with 2 control heads, for occasional convenience. And, it's likely to get traded for a TR-7A, when I get my hands back on it, after my move to Oklahoma, where it currently is stored.
Yes, the impulse to buy boatanchors is addictive, like tattoos. One is never enough. I would suggest something that is reasonably reliable, and can be had for a price that doesn't break the bank, like a Drake, Swan, etc. Then, as you operate it, and learn the things you like and dislike about what you got, start looking for others that fill the desire gap. I started with a "B" Line Drake, that I got from a very nice Elmer, Doug, and have worked my way into several very desired rigs. I have 2 left on my short list of ones I want. A Viking Invader (200, or 2000, matters not), and a Drake TR77, and I will die a happy man.
Welcome to the world of Boat Anchors.

Well, unexpectedly, earlier this week, an Invader 200 came available, locally, at an affordable price, so ADD an Invader 200 to the list, above. Geez, this is an addictive hobby. But this one is PHYSICALLY in near mint condition, it has been re-capped, but either the finals, or driver is going soft on me, so I just bought a 12BY7 and already have 6, or 8, NOS 6146B's on hand. So, when I get that 12BY7 in, I am going to start with it, and then, if needed, replace the 6146's. But it tunes to only about 60W on CW, then rapidly drops, before it can be fully tuned up, and starting PEP on SSB is about 40-50 watts, dropping, the whole time I am keyed up, but doesn't drop much below 10-15 watts.

Eico "7 Drifty 3's" should be a dime a dozen. They could lead you to go from one end of (at least, the OLD 40 Meter phone band) 40 Meters to the band edge in a 6 minute QSO! (Often back and forth.)

Nice pix John. I've had my hands on most of the stuff in your shack (not the 30S-1 of course) when it was new.
Most equipment from the 40's and early 50's (Hallicrafters SX-28, BC-610, Collins 75A-1, Hammerlund HQ-129, etc.) are still serviceable boat anchors, especially on AM and CW. I'm kind of partial to Hallicrafters, Collins, Johnson, and general coverage Hammarlund. Right now I have a KWM-2 and 321B-5 remote VFO. Collins is sort of the Harley-Davidson of ham gear. Beautifully built, a cult following, and costing a fortune even when used.
Something that wasn't mentioned is the idea of looking at some of the old article in CQ and QST archives. I would find that informative and fun.
