    Default Going for it!

It's been a long time coming, but I'm ready to enter Amateur Radio. I have recently discovered the code requirement was dropped, and this has renewed my interest. May currently plan may not be doable, but I would like to take both the Tech, and General tests on the 12th of may, then take my extra test on the 29th. As I just started studing yesterday, this doesn't leave much time. On just using some online guides on the practice tests. I finally nailed a 100% on a Tech test tonight, and will start adding tin the General material tomorrow! Wish me luck! Here's my progress for tonight.

Oh geez, where's the edit button? I guess I was more frazzled after taking those tests than I thought. Please excuse all the typos above!

    WMACKY,

As a general rule of thumb if you can consistently score 80% or better on the practice exams you are ready for the real thing. When my son took his Tech exam he also took the General exam for the heck of it. Considering he had never even seen the General material he missed passing by 2 questions. Keep studying and you will know when your ready.

BTW, after reviewing your scores above you are ready

If you've studied the material for the Tech - you can probably get past the General by paying attention to the General band edges and the sections on power supplies and rectifiers. Those seem to be the sections that give Tech students the most trouble. There is a lot of 'trivia' on the General that just needs to be memorized. Good luck on both tests.

Even in 2007, that's what I remember a lot of the General exam being - band edges.

Kind of silly now that I think about it, I don't think I spent 5 minutes actually on the air worried about what my band privileges were as a General

Yes, and if you look at the actual questions, there are really only a handful of potential questions on each of those subjects.

Thanks for the encouragement! Today was a big one for me, as I purchased my first tower today. It was a 60' Rohn 25G. No base plate, thrust bearing, or rotor shelf. Just 5 straights, and a tapered top. The seller claimed it to be rust free, but that was NOT the case. the center sections weren't to bad, but the bottom section, and the top will need some sanding. The good news is the tower was just $100, but I get to take it down.

I've also been looking at radio as you could imagine. Any place on the forum for newbies to discuss starter radio options? If I I didn't see one. I've been looking at the FT-950, and the TS-590S.

You will do it! (If you keep that up). I was ready to take my tech exam, but the test wasn't for two more weeks. So I began studying for the general, using the practice tests (both tech and general) and other online study guides like hamstudy. The day before and the day of the exam, I kept taking the practice tests, just like you did on the 27th. I scored 100% on the tech, and had two wrong on general. That being said, I realize that I have much to learn about amateur radio, but now I can do it at my own pace. As for the extra, personally I will wait on that for awhile. Just don't forget to practice the tech exam questions before you take your tests, because you can't take the general unless you pass the tech.
