The unemployment rate in CA is allegedly very high, but I don't personally know anyone who wants to work and doesn't have a job. The film and television industry here is always hiring as people leave to go off on their own for fame and fortune or whatever they think they can find, so openings come up every hour.
I have four kids who are employed just fine, and three are still in college. I'm employed, my XYL is employed, all my neighbors are employed.
Seems to me the unemployment rates, high as they may be, reflect a fair number of "unemployables" for various reasons.
I've been working since age 14, and I'm 60 now, so that's 46 years of continuous employment.
Yes, I've moved to go where the jobs are, for sure.
Well you do know someone who wants a job but doesn't have one.
The last time I relocated for a job it lasted just under a year and I'm still paying for the move out to Texas and back here.
I think if you could find the demographics for disabled females, you would find the unemployment rate quite high.
Even higher than the U6 figures for Kalifornia.

I believe that.
I was up at Apple this week and they have so many openings I couldn't even believe it; that included digital lab techs to Alpha test software. As a multi-billion dollar company with more money than the Government, they have a lot of openings they need to fill with people having various handicaps (to meet various requirements). You might consider applying there. It's a huge place, could be a bit daunting for some; but it's a great and very successful company in the major expansion mode and they probably pay relocation benefits. Gorgeous campus, modern facilities.
Silicon Valley is an expensive place, but they pay wages that would make it affordable. I think.

Relocating is our of the question for the next two to three years as I continue to pay for my last move.
I won't rule out the possibility of relocating after all I've done that twice in my life.

I've moved 9 times since I've been married. Though, five of those were during Active Duty days.
I think WIK has moved MORE than that!
BTW, moving stinks.

No shortage of jobs for able-bodied 30 y/o network engineering men in Southern California. I was given notice last month my contract is ending after 2 years. In the past 3 weeks I have had 8 interviews, 2 second interviews, and another interview tomorrow. These are all 85-95k jobs in the area. Either the market in your area is just terrible, or your skill set is not in demand, or you don't have a mastery of it. I have never been unemployed for more than a month, and typical time from interview to job is 3 weeks or so. Perhaps there are programs in your area for additional training, or maybe learning a new trade. Anything in the computer industry has always been needed as long as the applicant is presentable and can demonstrate and quantify their skill set, and currently based on the number of job openings, technology jobs are REALLY hot right now. I can't see how people can be unemployed for months and months and months and months unless they are unskilled, or under skilled but want top pay for it. Maybe you need to lower your career goal to a realistic marker, or increase your skill set. - I understand I probably sound like a jerk, but I don’t think that invalidates anything I said. If you are in the computer field, and you do have relevant skills, I do know a few dozen head hunters who would be willing to help you.

Just an FYI: Some employers up in North Dakota require that you have living arrangements in place before accepting a job; there's a bit of a housing shortage up there so they want to make sure that you have someplace to move to, first, before finalizing your hire.

The possibility of UNEMPLOYMENT is very Scary for me. I have all these visions of living out of the back seat of my black Town Car under a bridge, eating out of dumpsters, and standing by freeway exits with a carboard sign for day and months and years.
I moved ONE STEP closer to Unemployment this morning. The boss snapped at me for some silly insignificant item that makes no difference whatsoever. I am very mellow and reserved, but when backed into a corner, will SNAP BACK! I am not going to cower and beg for forgiveness when I feel I have done NOTHING WRONG! If I DID do something wrong, then I will admit it and take the Cat-O-NINE-TAILS Back thrashing like a MAN! But I am not going to back down when I feel I am being UNJUSTLY Picked on! So will see if I join the unemployment crowd.
Here in Kalifornia, the boss can FIRE you just because he doesn't like the color of tie you wore in today. Or if your shoes aren't shined to his inspection quality. But they CAN'T fire you if you are the wrong race/gender/sexual preference. Those are the ONLY reasons they can't fire you. Everything else is free game. So people are VERY LUCKY INDEED to have ANY JOB AT ALL here!

I'd think having a well-paying job right now would make that go faster, no?
