Climate Change And Alarmists
'Gaia' Scientist Admits Mispredicting Rate of Climate Change
DesScorp writes
"James Lovelock, the scientist that came up with the 'Gaia Theory' and a prominent herald of climate change, once predicted utter disaster for the planet from climate change, writing 'before this century is over billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable.' Now Lovelock is walking back his rhetoric, admitting that he and other prominent global warming advocates were being alarmists. In a new interview with MSNBC he says: '"The problem is we don't know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago. That led to some alarmist books — mine included — because it looked clear-cut, but it hasn't happened," Lovelock said. "The climate is doing its usual tricks. There's nothing much really happening yet. We were supposed to be halfway toward a frying world now," he said. "The world has not warmed up very much since the millennium. Twelve years is a reasonable time it (the temperature) has stayed almost constant, whereas it should have been rising — carbon dioxide is rising, no question about that," he added.' Lovelock still believes the climate is changing, but at a much, much slower pace."
All I have to say is
TOLD YOU SO.

Sue, James Lovelock has a PhD in medicine, he has no scientific standing in climate studies. His utterances on global climate are worth little more than yours or, for that matter, mine.
Best estimates for warming by the end of this century are between 2 and 3C, if you wish I can provide a slew of references for this in the form of refereed papers, not soft sources, blogs and the like. 2 - 3C is not calamitious but it ain't good, and warming won't stop in 2100.

Moot point;
this guy started the current crop of watermelon frenzy.
He is saying it's overblown and in effect calling it a hoax.

How can it be moot, either somebody is an expert or they are not, he is not. That makes a recantation as valuable as the original contribution from him, i.e, no value at all. End of story.
"Watermelon frenzy"? New one to me, but anyway, isn't Gore the Big Bad Man to the Denialists?

The guy is the one responsible for the Gaia theory wrote a book about it and most of the environmentalist community rallied around him.
The guy is honest about the fact we don't know what the climate is doing.
Most of the so called climatologists you watermelons back are not climatologists in the first place.
First it was a new ice age and the world needed to pay a tax to stop it.
Then it was global warming and the world was suppose to pay a tax to stop it.
Now it's climate change and the world is suppose to pay a tax to stop it.
Tell me Brian what do you say about 4.25 billion years of climate change and who has been paying the tax to stop that?

What would you like me to say, Sue, how much space can be spared? Do you want my take on the dim early sun paradox, or the climb out of the "snowball Earth" condition? Would you like tidbits about the CO2 concentration at glacial maxima being half the pre-industrial level, and the relevance of that to a doubling of the CO2 levels today, or about lead and lag in CO2/climate plots? How about the Jurassic anoxic ocean events and depressed carbonate compensation depths and their link to a climate several degrees warmer than today and a sea level a couple of hundred metres higher? What I am trying to say is that when it comes to past global climates I am not an ignoranus, and I am quite prepared to debate these topics if you so wish. What I will not debate is taxes, that changes the topic from science to politics and kills any chance of a reasoned discussion - and kills the thread, too.

Hmm, with the last ice age about 15000 years ago, it is obvious that there has been warming in the climate. But that also makes me wonder, how many Ice ages has the world been through in the last couple of million years?
In the last 2 million years there have been about 60 glacial advances, or long durations of very cool periods causing the formation glaciers and expansion, these are followed by rapid warming that cause glacial retreat.
You see the pattern here?
