I've had a few cases where I had a QSO with a DX contact; they gave me their callsign phonetically. But when I look them up on QRZ, they're not listed. What gives? Are they illegit?

QRZ is not an authority on callsigns, especially foreign ones. They get updates from the FCC for all of the US callsigns, so that database is pretty accurate. AFAIK, any DX entity has to register with QRZ to be in the database. Just because they don't register with QRZ doesn't mean they are not legit.
