    APOLLO PROGRAM ---> ARI Tortona (IQ1TW) will commemorate the Apollo Space Program (1961-1972) between 1 and 31 July. Further information on the relevant award can be found at http://aritortona.xoom.it or from Pier Paolo Liuzzo (IZ1XBB, iz1xbb[@]tiscali.it). [TNX IZ1XBB]

    DXCC NEWS ---> XX9E (Macao, 2012 operation) has been approved for DXCC credit. [TNX NC1L]

    IDXC 2013 ---> Sponsored by the Northern California DX Club, the 64th Annual International DX Convention will be held at the Visalia Conference Center in downtown Visalia, California on 19-21 April 2013. Please check the IDXC website (www.dxconvention.com) during the week of 18 June for details about booking hotel rooms for the Convention.

    IOTA EU-155 ---> Back in October 2011 [425DXN 1069] the RSGB IOTA Manager reported that "following information received from a local operator in Italy that the only two islands listed as qualifying for EU-155, Baron and Scanno di Piallazza, no longer existed, we would not be accepting for credit any new operations claiming to take place from EU-155 pending a final check. This has now been carried out and it confirms the report. Under IOTA rules we have no option but to withdraw EU-155 from the list of valid IOTA groups and to amend scores down. However we have noted that the Po Delta is a remarkably fragile natural environment with a varying sedimentation rate influenced by river flow, tide and storm and have not ruled out the possibility of one of the islands reforming in time. In the circumstances, we have decided to remove EU-155 credit from all scores on 1 September 2012 but to retain the QSO information on the database in a non-counting format in case the situation should change. We will review the position periodically. In the meantime, while credit will not be given for new operations, we will allow credit for pre-October 2011 operations for certificate purposes only in applications received before 1 September 2012". [TNX Roger Balister, G3KMA, RSGB IOTA Manager]

    IOTA NEWS ---> The following operations in the period February to May 2012 have provided acceptable validation and are therefore approved for IOTA credit: AT2DW (AS-175), XF1AA (NA-189), 4A3RCC (NA-200), KL7RRC/P (NA-240), 4W0VB/P (OC-232), and CW5GI (SA-039). The 7O6T (AF-028) operation, which has been accepted for DXCC, is also approved. [TNX G3KMA]

    * PLEASE NOTE: The report "could" contain "Pirate/SLIM" operations or more likely a "BUSTED CALLSIGN". As always, you never know - "Work First Worry Later" (WFWL).

    1A, S.M.O.M. (Press Release #1): "Thirty years have passed since 1A made its way onto the DXCC list. And an activation by an International team looks to celebrate the uniqueness of this event. So, from the 1st to the 4th July, we will listen them on the air as 1A0C from Santa Maria del Priorato, home of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The callsign that will be used belongs to the 'The Order of Malta's Italian Relief Corps (CISOM)", an organization specialized in bringing assistance and relief during emergencies. This underscores the dual value of this activation. On the one hand, there's the fun side ham radio, giving a not so easy 'new one' to as many stations as possible (especially from the U.S. and Japan). On the other hand, however, there's the noble goal, as often seen in ham radio, where a spirit of cooperation and mutual aid are shared by operators all over the world. The team's aim, in fact, is to raise funds – thanks to donations and contributions from QSL requests – in order to buy radio equipment which The Order of Malta's Italian Relief Corps volunteers will be able to use in case of emergencies. The operators list includes: 1A0X, 1A0Z, EA2RY, EA5RM, EA7AJR, EA7KW, F5CWU, IN3ZNR, IT9YVO, IZ8IYX, PB2T, SP3DOI and KH6CG as a pilot for North America and Pacific. They will be active on HF+6m and the QSLs for contacts with 1A0C can be requested via Francesco Cozzi, 1A0Z. A website will be online soon, stay tuned! 73 de 1A0C"

    2012 TOPBAND MOST WANTED SURVEY. This annual survey of 160 Meter DX needs is taken by Garry/NI6T and Larry/K8UT and is now available online at: http://survey.hamdocs.com/?sid=11389 Please submit your needs list between now and August 31, 2012. Modifications submitted after August 31, 2012, will be used for the following year's survey. The results for 2012-2013 will be available in September 2012. A link to the 2011 Topband Most Wanted Survey results is available at: http://www.k8ut.com/tiki-list_file_g...p?galleryId=12

    5H, TANZANIA. Just a reminder that Chas, NK8O/VE3ISD, has traveled to Mwanza on Lake Victoria for several years working there but has never operated any amateur radio from Tanzania. Look for him for the first time to operate as 5H9CP between June 11-22nd. Chas states, "I am primarily a CW operator. QRP and straight key operators, please be ready! After fighting through pile-ups with my QRP station at home, I understand the challenges. The rig on this trip will be an Elecraft KX3 and antenna arrays will depend on the trees, how high I can get the ropes to go, and whether a dipole, loop, or vertical will be the best for the site from which I choose to operate. Times and frequencies will be published [QRZ.com] before my departure for Tanzania, but they definitely will not be written in stone. Operating times will depend entirely on my responsibilities and schedule at the Nyakato Health Center." QSL via NK8O.

    9K2, KUWAIT (Special Event). Members of the Kuwait Amateur Radio Society will be active with the special callsign, 9K2KCBB, between June 13-15th. Activity is to celebrate "World Blood Donor Day" which is held on June 14th every year. See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Blood_Donor_Day> or <http://www.who.int/worldblooddonorday/en/>. Activity will be on CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL direct to 9K2RA.

    A5, BHUTAN. The members of the FGC DX Group (Foundation for Global Children) are now QRT as A5A. The ClubLog shows as of 2308z, June 6th, the A5A team made 38068 QSOs with 14819 unique callsigns (20879/CW and 17189/SSB). Breakdown is: 337/AF, 6954/AS, 25273/EU, 4929/NA, 309/OC and 266/SA. QSL A5A via JH1AJT (see Web page for details). For more details and update, visit the A5A Web apge at: http://bhutan2012.com/index.php

    A5, BHUTAN. Just a reminder (in case you did not work the A5A operation) that a JA team of operators are now active from a hotel (altitude 10,000 ft.) in Thimpu between now June 14th. Operators mentioned with their A5 callsigns are Shigeo/JA1JQY (A52JY), Nakayama/JA1KJW (A52KJ), Kaoru/ JA3MCA (A52MA), Akira/JK1EBA (A52BA) and Kunio/JA8VE (A52VE). Activity will be on 160-6 meters [with an emphasis on 6 meters] using CW, SSB and RTTY. A beacon will be on 50.125 MHz. QSL via their home callsigns.

    DXCC NEWS. Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL Awards Branch Manager, reports that the following operation is approved for DXCC credit:
    XX9E - Macao; 2012 Operation

    DXER ARRESTED IN GREECE UPDATE! Amateur Radio Newsline reported an update this week, and that well-known DXer/World-Traveller Baldur Drobnika, DJ6SI, stated that "I wasn't charged with espionage. As a reason of my arrest it was stated that: 1. I performed radio traffic without the approval of the Greek authorities;
    2. I owned transmitting equipment which enabled the reception of other frequencies; To the accusation was later added an other point: I hindered the visualiza- tion of the content of my notebook." Kostas, SV1DPI, also reported an update on June 9th, stating [edited]: "According to the RAAG's site, the Court decided yesterday (June 8th) that Baldur is innocent for the first accuse (operating his rig). According to the Court for the 2nd accuse (destroy of his computer and possible evidence of his activity), he was guilty. This second case will be examined again in the future, and I hope they get the right decision in the future. Baldur was, of course, in Germany (he left after the first judge) and only his lawyer was at the Court. My opinion is that what happened was by mistake in an island (Kos) very close to Turkey (the 2 coasts are only some meters far) where the Authorities were too suspicious... When Greek or foreign hams ask for special calls from the Islands which are too close to our borders, the Navy has been asked for approval. If Greece would like to have this policy for some of the islands, it should have signed the CEPT with the exception of these islands but we didn't. So everyone should have better knowledge of the laws and stop asking these papers in general because it has no sense. But unfortunately it seems that we have more important things to do during this time frame... All SV hams, we ask from Baldur to forgive our country for the bad behavior..."

    1A, S.M.O.M. (Press Release #2). The 1A0C Web page is now active, and the following press release was posted [edited]: "Following the first press release about 1A0C, we proudly announce that the website about the amateur radio activity that will be held from 1st to 4th July 2012 in Santa Maria del Priorato is now online. You can visit it at: http://www.1a0c.com While you'll find full details on the activation on the website, we would like to remind you the strong commitment of the team to offer the elusive 1A entity to as many hams outside Europe as possible. So, since the beginning, we ask for understanding from European operators, reminding them ham radio is also about being fair. The website contains also a 'Donation' page. We ask every ham interested to work 1A to check it, as the July activation of Malta Order has a goal beyond amateur radio. Every QSO will contribute to that goal, so it's really important to raise awareness about our project. Thanking in advance for cooperation and help in spreading the word, we kindly aim anyone looking for further details to get in touch with p.r. and media contact <1a0c@1a0c.com>."

    KP4, PUERTO RICO (Special Event). Dr. José C Vicéns, President of the Puerto Rico Amateur Radio League (PRARL), announced [edited], "On Sunday July 1st, 2012, the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee will be celebrating the Flag Bearing of the Puerto Rico Delegation to the Summer Olympic Games in London. This event marks the beginning of the transatlantic journey to represent Puerto Rico in this international event. The delegation will depart the Olympic Committee and will walk to the Governor's Mansion to receive the flag that will be used in the opening ceremony and remain hoisted in the Olympic Village throughout the Games. In celebration of such an important event, The Puerto Rico Amateur Radio League will be joining the Olympic Committee in this celebration by setting up a special event station from the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee headquarters. We will be using the special callsign "K4O" for this event. We would like to use our radiowaves to let the world know that the Puerto Rican delegation is ready for the games in London. Operation will be on June 30th (9:00am- 5:00pm) and July 1st (9:00am-2:00pm) from the headquarters of the Puerto Rico Opympic Comitte in San Juan."

    TEST CRUISE OF OH10X/MM ON BALTIC SEA. Kristina Cruises Ltd with Radio Arcala, OH8X, are in the process of testing whether a permanent amateur radio station will suit the maritime environment and serve DXers in their leisure time, whether cruising in the Mediterranean or off West Africa or just doing island-hopping in the Caribbean. The objective for the first run is to look at potential interference issues both ways - from the amateur radio station to the ship's navigation system and from the ship's advanced PC networks to the reception of amateur radio transmissions. But while testing, with Martti, OH2BH, at the helm, another target is to contact all continents and achieve WAC to celebrate the occasion of signing a possible permanent agreement for the station to be available for guests with an amateur radio license. The onboard station will be active at the peak propagation hours to various continents on 14267 kHz from June 20-24th, 2012, and the test cruise will take the ship to Estonia (ES), Gotland, Sweden (SM1), Aland Islands (OH0), and back to Finland. The ship M/S Kristina Katarina is a 138m long vessel and has a cruising speed of 15 knots, with a maximum number of 450 guests and a crew of up to one-hundred. The ship is owned by a private Finnish company with a Finnish crew sailing under the Finnish flag. Two Finnair jetliners are backing the operations for change of passengers at a variety of ports along the way." DXCC NEWS ---> TL8ES (Central African Republic, 2011 operation) and TT8ES (Chad, 2012 operation have been approved for DXCC credit. [TNX NC1L]

    HEARD ISLAND 2014 ---> The initial operators for the 2014 expedition to Heard Island (www.heardisland.org) include KK6EK, ON6TT, DL1MGB, N6MZ, DJ9ZB, NP4IW, AD6E, N4GRN, DJ5IW, N6PSE, W3WL, W0GJ and AA7XT. The next round of team members will be announced on 15 August.

    IOTA EU-117 & EU-133 GROUPS ---> This is an abridged version of the official announcement dated 16 June that can be found on the RSGB IOTA's website. Following the decision by the ARRL to delete Malyy Vysotskiy Island (MVI) from the current DXCC list as of 17 February 2012, the IOTA Committee has considered action to be taken with regard to the future of EU-117. A consultation conducted by an enlarged IOTA management group produced a clear majority in favour of splitting EU-133 to form two groups within the Gulf of Finland, North and South. The dividing line has been set at 60 degrees, 15 minutes north. The islands now constituting the two groups can be seen via the Search facility on www.rsgbiota.org. The change has an effective date backdated to 17 February 2012. Past credits for MVI will continue to stand and new opportunities are created for contacting EU-117. Record-holders need take no action regarding existing credits as they will not be deleted as a consequence of this change, nor in the case of EU-133 credits need they be transferred unless requested.

    OH10X/MM ---> Kristina Cruises Ltd with Radio Arcala, OH8X of Finland, are in the process of testing whether a permanent Amateur Radio station will suit the maritime environment and serve DXers in their leisure time, whether cruising in the Mediterranean or off West Africa or just doing island-hopping in the Caribbean. The onboard station will be active at the peak propagation hours to various continents on 14267 kHz on 20-24 June. The test cruise will take the ship to Estonia (ES), Gotland, Sweden (SM1), Aland Islands (OH0), and back to Finland. The objective for the first run is to look at potential interference issues both ways - from the Amateur Radio station to the ship's navigation system and from the ship's advanced PC networks to the reception of Amateur Radio transmissions.

    YASME AWARDS ---> The Yasme Foundation has for many years offered two Yasme Awards, available at no cost to qualifying applicants. The first Yasme Award, in the form of a handsome plaque, is offered to those amateurs who submit proof of 30 QSOs with Yasme officials and DXpeditions that have at least one Yasme official as a participant. The second, the Yasme Supreme Award, is in the form of a representation of the YASME boat used by Danny Weil in his around-the-world DXpedition and is available to those who submit proof of 60 QSOs with Yasme officials and DXpeditions with a Yasme official as a participant. After a year-long evaluation of the rules for qualifying call signs, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the rules for qualifying call signs have been revised. As a result, many call signs have been added to the list. The revised list of call signs eligible for both awards is available at http://www.yasme.org/DXpeditions.html

    + SILENT KEYS + Sayed Abdel Samei (SU1SA) passed away on 13 June. He was the President of the Egyptian Radio Amateurs Society for Development (ERASD) and succeeded SU1GS, who died in January.

Wayne tells OPDX, " If all goes well we'll have an IC-7000 and a THP HL-550FX amp (500 watts), with a TH2 (Hy-Gain 2-element tribander) plus a dipole for 40. We may pass on 80 because the noise level there was extremely high when we were in Rarotonga for the ARRL Phone DX Contest." QSL both callsigns via N6NB. Read about their first operation at: http://commfaculty.fullerton.edu/woverbeck/e51ynb.htm

    FP, ST. PIERRE & MIQUELON. Mike, VE2XB, will once again be active as FP/VE2XB from St. Pierre & Miquelon Islands (NA-032, DIFO FP-002, WLOTA 1417) between August 10-20th. Activity will be on all bands from 40-6 meters using 2 Hexbeams and a Windom. This year they are hoping to have a station dedicated to the Digital modes, mostly RTTY, using a TS480 at 200w and one of the Hexbeams. As usual, QSL via the manager Tim, M0URX, (see www.m0urx.com) using his OQRS system for a speedy turn around. Logs will be uploaded to LoTW and Clublog as soon as they get back to the mainland. Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network and 1A0C for the following DX information.

    1A, S.M.O.M. (Press Release - Thoughts about the magic band. Last press release before the kick off). Posted on June 28th, by the 1A0C team [edited]: "Roma is not precisely a remote place with scarce ham population! So we don't see the need of a beacon. Even more, we don't want to upset the local ham community with another broadcasting signal in the band, there is a nice beacon already (I0JX) and it will be more than enough. We will, of course, keep watching the early warning sites such as the 6m ON4KST prop pages and DXCluster.

    As it was intended from the beginning this operation is primarily focused on working North America and Asia. Our plan for 6m is to steer the beam to JA in the morning. All eastern EU will be covered in 1 hop as well. And turn the beam to NA past midday, giving a chance for the eagers in West EU. Last operations by 1A0KM has provided Sovereign Military Order of Malta to most of the EU 6m population, however there are very few dxpeditions planned for this season, therefore pileups from the old Europe can be large as people are idle looking for any prey to hunt. The 6m propagation, specially on Es skip, is unpredictable, but our experience of the last 20 years points that during the last week of June/1st of July conditions are best for Xatlantic contacts and long haul openings to the N. East. We need to be very observant for any possible multihop event, managing meanwhile the EU pileup smartly whilst looking for possible links across the Pond or Siberia. This is not easy, but we have done it successfully and recently from Algeria, Egypt, Morroco, Palestine, Andorra, etc.
    At the end, we are in Europe, hence, when working EU the so called "DX-windows" must be avoided, that is 50.100-50.130. We are thinking to stay fixed on one frq for all CW operation below it, between 50084-95, in order to not to disturb upwards the band to leak the pileup into the DX windows and choose a phone frq up in the band, away from the DX zone, e.g. 50180. We really hope the local operators, and even the European 6m fans, will appreciate this decision of the team.

    BAND PLANS

    6M 50.084 50.180 --

    50 MHz information and operating tips
    ----------------------------------------
    - The 6 meter band will be included in this operation. We'll focus for long haul openings, as most of the Europe regions have been widely covered in the recent years.

    - We plan to use the following frequencies: 50.084 for CW and 50.180 for SSB. Although they may be changed, depending on local noise/birdies. Split operation will be deployed when needed.

    - The main mode will be CW. If band conditions permit, SSB will be used to gain a higher QSO rate. Please do not ask for mode changing.

    - Please avoid QSO duplication, give others a chance. Logs will be uploaded twice a day to our website. If it will work, we will provide the live log online (new are not sure 100% now).

    - We don't find necessary to set a beacon station this time.

    - Our Grid Locator is JN61FV. Please, DO NOT send your locator, it is not needed and we won’t log it anyway, it wastes precious time."
