Default FBI warning for dangerous DNS virus

Some interesting stuff, here. Take note of the last line.

Update on March 12, 2012: To assist victims affected by the DNSChanger malicious software, the FBI obtained a court order authorizing the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) to deploy and maintain temporary clean DNS servers. This solution is temporary, providing additional time for victims to clean affected computers and restore their normal DNS settings. The clean DNS servers will be turned off on July 9, 2012, and computers still impacted by DNSChanger may lose Internet connectivity at that time.

The site recommended to check for the virus is www.dcwg.org

I couldn't get it to open.

This is the first I have ever heard of the FBI getting involved with computer viruses.

It took me a while to figure out what this is all about. It's not a general problem with the internet DNS system, it's "just" another Windows malware attack.

There was / is malware that changes the DNS settings on Windows computers to point to the bad guys' DNS server which of course resolves common domain names to lookalike sites ready to trick people out of their passwords etc.

As a temporary fix, the FBI asked / ordered ISC, the makers of BIND to setup DNS servers, presumably at the same IP address and therefore effectively replacing the bad DNS servers. The meant infected Windows machines will go to the correct sites, not the bogus sites.

Well... I guess the FBI did a good thing to help avert lots of problems but I wonder if it might also provide a convenient fishing (not to be confused with phishing) exercise for the FBI.

I wonder if ISC are supplying data back to the FBI as to what DNS queries are being performed by innocent victims.

    Also... from the FBI site:

The six cyber criminals were taken into custody yesterday in Estonia by local authorities, and the U.S. will seek to extradite them.
As much as I disapprove of what these guys were doing, couldn't the US let Estonia deal with them? They're a member of the European Union so I assume they have a proper legal system. I guess some of the servers were in the US which gives the FBI some legal means to extradite.

I wonder if Estonia has laws that would cover this sort of thing? Now, if they have laws that let them cut the hands and genitals off hackers, I would say to let Estonia deal with them. Otherwise, they should be tried in the place with the most draconian anti-hacking laws.

Well if it stumps up windows, how will politicians get hold of their secret porn fetish if the FBI do shut off their PC?
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

What I was going to put on would insinuate they were this:

    But decided against it.

Am I the only one here who thinks there should be a government mandate to make the Windoze boot screen look like the FBI WARNING at the beginning of VHSs? (Do they still have these with DVD's? I have no idea)

You can change that yourself if you want to.

"America's quiet warriors are the legion of ham radio operators, 700,000 of them, who are always at ready for backup duty in emergencies – amateur, unpaid, uncelebrated, civilian radio operators, during and after floods and fires and tornadoes. After the 9/11 attacks, hams were indispensable in reuniting friends and families. Most recently it was they who expedited the search for debris after the Columbia Explosion , and right now, at this moment, they are involved in homeland security to a greater degree than you would want me to make public."
