tranverter kit 28/144 0r 440
I am wanting to work the other sats but dont have the USB or LSB just FM. I have only found a few and they are more than a used rig might be. Does any one know of a kit form of a transverter? I have heard there was one in an old issue of QST? Been reading the past threads about OS-50, I havent had much luck, I can hear a few people giving grid square and the sat is gone. I guess my home made arrow type ant. is just not enough? Thanks KA2RRZ Ron from TN.
Sorry to break it to you, but transverter kits are just not cheap. $200 gets you bare bones, $300+ gets you a kit w/enclosure and connectors. Down East Microwave (DEMI) stuff is good, but it's not cheap.
I would encourage you to keep looking for rigs. Icom 820, Icom 821 are good along with Yaesu FT-726 or FT-736. Definitely not new gear, but sometimes you find deals. Sometimes the prices are outrageous, too.
SO-50 is tricky to work at times. A homemade Arrow-style antenna should work. How many elements did you use?

well thanks for the info I just thought I was not looking in the right spot. For $200.00-$300.00 one might find a good used rig ,even if you had to put alittle more into it im thinking alot less messing around. The arrow type hand held yagi is 3 elements on 2m and 6 element on 440 Good swr , not very good looking!!! My fist one used PVC for boom, its starting to bend already, Live and learn, HT is a FT-470 it will full duplex . Home made diplexer with out it,it seems to take away from the rec. I am new to the birds but not to ham radio, I started at the age of 13 a few years later and alot of code pratice became a general. 73 Ka2rrz RON
The 1970s and early 1980s were a wonderful time, when the 3 major Japanese mfg.
offered a number of VHF & UHF radios -- FM and Multi-modes.
Remember the Icom IC-202 and IC-402 (USB, CW), first introduced in 1976 ?
A modern 21st century version using that form factor and an LCD screen the size of a Kindle (user interface) for satellite usage (VHF/UHF) would be great product with an Arrow antenna.
One step further would be a SDR Black Box (Elecraft KX3 style) for the Radio/RF and
Bluetooth interface to readily available Apple iPad or Android tablets for the User Interface (UI) with Applications.

Thanks to everyone!! I do think that the older radio's multi-mode is the cheep way to go for now. I am sure the blue tooth kindle size will be again out of reach of most to buy. Maybe QST will pull there heads out of there back side and publish something intresting like many years gone by? (wishful thinking) Ok I fell better now.

The late 1990s and 2000s brought us multi-band all-mode radios that run circles around the monoband radios from the 70s. Even the FT-817 from 2000 and the later FT-817ND with 5W transmitters have almost double the power output of the IC-202/IC-402 radios, do more than just USB and CW, and add in HF plus 6m. Two of these work well as a full-duplex all-mode satellite station, or use one as a transmitter with an all-mode receiver (there are many options for handheld all-mode receivers, as well as the all-mode receiver in Kenwood's TH-F6A 2m/222/70cm HT).

Had a IC-202 in the 70's and I had homebrewed a linear amplifier for it. It put out 50w with 2w drive but if I had corrected the problems with my grid circuit it would have been much higher. Still that wasn't bad and I had a lot of fun, even ran SSTV. These little units were not the best but none of the owners cared.
By the way, it's the IC-502 that was for six meters.
Ten Tec used to make transverters but it doesn't look like they have them anymore.
