The cops did nothing wrong.
The told the students to disperse. The students linked arms and physically resisted when the cops tried to pick them up and move them.
Pepper spray is a reasonable and mild escalation of force. Certainly a better choice than tasers, night sticks and dogs, which were available.

Agreed about the cops. Those taken into custody should be glad it wasn't in the 60's. I'm just old enough to remember seeing fire hoses and police dogs going after these kid's parents in Chicago back in '68.

I absolutely DISAGREE! Cops have no right to punish those they are trying to arrest. If it is alright to use pepper spray, why not let them beat suspects with night sticks? How about bring out the dogs to bite? Maybe shoot a few just to show them who is boss? Like it or not, the cops must use minimal force to arrest. Just because those they are trying to arrest don't cooperate doesn't give the cops the right to to use any force more than necessary to make an arrest. The use of pepper spray was totally unnecessary to make an arrest!

The trouble with politics is that those who are profoundly stupid are absolutely certain they are right while those who are intelligent are filled with doubt.

I'm with Robert. If protesters are passively resisting arrest then the arresting officers must use minimal force to remove the protesters; if the protesters proactively resist then cops should up the ante.
Example: Say you're standing in the middle of a street protesting City Service's lack of initiative to repair it. A cop comes up to you and says, "Sir, you're not allowed to stand here, please remove yourself immediately from the middle of the street."
You cross your arms and don't budge. Are you going to tell me it's okay for the cop to use pepper spray to remove you? Of course not. The cop should use minimal physical force--with or without another officer's assistance--to get you out of there but that's all that s/he should be allowed to use.
Now, if you were to take a swipe at the officer, then boy howdy--prepare to be sprayed!

You're wrong! The cops violated the protester's First Amendment rights!

Otherwise, there would be no difference between us and the victims of oppression in Fascist regimes.

AHWGs. And cowards. The kind who, when some real action is coming down, will be in the back room doing paperwork or sitting on the can. These people will act in ways that put good cops in danger.
Fortunately most of the kids will end up better off than their tormenters. And the tormentors will be able to blame minorities, lib'ruls, conservatives, the Trilateral Commission or whoever for their plight.
