LMR400 + N Connector + PL259?
If you use LMR400 coax, can you solder to it, or do you have to crimp? Does I'd rather solder to make sure there's a good connection. I guess you have to use a PL-259 on one end for the radio and an N connector on the other end for the antenna? Will I need any reducers?
And, what's a good dealer to buy coax and connectors from? Thanks.

IF you already have the LMR Times coaxial cable -- THEN you just need the proper CRIMP Connectors.
RF Industries - Crimp Connectors (California, just down the road from RF Parts)
This is what I use
http://www.rfindustries.com/
RF Parts (California) is a very good dealer for Coax and connectors
They are a dealer for RF Industries Crimp Connectors (~ $1 connector)

No reducers. Crimps work great but only if you have the right tool.
LMR400 fits a standard Amphenol PL-259 83-1SP connector just fine, but does not fit a standard type N UG-21 connector because the center conductor is too large in diameter; however The RF Connection http://www.therfc.com has specialty N connectors which are standard UG-21/D/U type but include an "oversized" center pin made for LMR400 and those work fine -- I've used hundreds of them.
Those are all "standard" connectors which are non-crimp.

So if I buy LMR-400, then I need to get crimp-style connectors and a certain tool for them? Thanks to all.

No you do not need crimp style connectors. However if you do use crimp style (I don't recommend) you need to use the right tool or they will not work well.
I highly recommend the Wireman link above. I've purchased from him before. Likewise if you need an N connector at the antenna have them put the connector on for you when you order. Both if you don't have to go through a small opening somewhere. Double check it before you install just in case. Also if you only need a short run of LMR-400 The Wireman has drops from 5ft to 200 from spools that are for sale on the site at reduced prices. Take time to check out all of the sites offering cable and keep in mind that there are options and different types of Low Loss cable.

LMR-400, N-connectors. Good stuff - if done right.
If you don't want to buy the crimpers and prep tools - or learn how to install the connectors. Not such a big deal. Just visit your local 2 way LMR shop (usually has a big 'M' over their door). They may even sell you the parts at a discount, if you ask nicely. Protip: bring donuts.
I love LMR-400, I use the crimp on connectors with the connector manufacturer's crimp tool. In fact, I just had another 100' and 8 connectors delivered to the house for my own use. They work very well, for me and my stuff and the hundreds of customers I've installed it for as well. Yea, you need that many to justify the cost of the crimpers!!

Chaulk up another happy LMR crimp user. I have attached thousands of connectors from rg174 through 7/8 heliax. I used to swear by solder type and would only use them.
After I discovered high quality crimp connectors (not from any local place) and purchased nice crimpers with the correct dies, I will never solder again!!
